Beeper or bell or...
Beeper or bell or...
I've used on a bell on flushing dogs in the past and I've used (and currently own) a TB2500 set to beep on point only before with setters. I've also hunting w/ companions who use the silent GPS systems, as well as old timers who didn't run anything on their dogs. Please select your preference in the poll, and feel free to elaborate in the thread.

I like the Astro above all else then a beeper with remote. I can't stand the constant clanging of the bell.

Re: Beeper or bell or...
I use a bell until I can get me an Astro or TEK. I would never run a beeper. I can't stand the sound of them.
I'd rather live on the side of a mountain, than wander through canyons of concrete and steel.
Re: Beeper or bell or...
If the cover is tall enough I can't see the dog, it wears a bell, with a beeper that is quiet until I press the locate on the transmitter. If the cover is mostly short, no bell, just a beeper that is quiet until I press the locate on the transmitter(I only press it if the dog goes into taller cover and doesn't come out). I have an Astro, but don't like it(I spend too much time looking at the screen and not the dog  I just use the astro(controler turned off) in tests or trials as a back up to finding a lost dog.

I use a beeper collar, the Dogtra 2500T&B, in "Point Only" mode. I can't stand the constant beeping if you have in on all the time. I also hate the constant clanging of a bell. I can see the value of a bell in Grouse woods but I hunt almost entirely pheasants. However, with my hearing getting worse I will probably have to ditch the beeper collar and go to a GPS.

A pleasant sounding bell in the crisp grouse woods is like magic......only different.

I run the beeper with the hawk screamer. The beeper let's me know my dogs location. The hawk screamer helps keep the birds down.

Astro. There's enough clanging and beeping in everyday life. The deafening silence is why I escape to the out of doors.
Most of the time I know where she is by standing silently and listening for twigs snapping back into place. If the transmitter beeps I go find her.

Use a bell on my pointers.
Re: Beeper or bell or...
Telemetry hands down. Tracker specifically for what I enjoy doing with my dogs but lots of good, reliable options. Still seeing too many GPS failures too take seriously as true dog recovery device. Every single person i hunt/train with has problems with them and message boards littered with questions about problems with them.

I use a Garmin Astro with a Tritronics Pro100 e-collar. I want a telemetry setup but am (still) waiting for Marshall to debut it's GPS/Telemetry combo unit. Tick-tock, tick-tock...

Still have an ancient Sonic "Basic Beeper" I use in the grouse woods and for quail. Also have a Garmin. No beeper for wild pheasants.

Not only beeper but the one mentioned in the survey.
Dogtra T&B 2500 run on point mode only with the occasional locate. Once beeper goes off and I'm sure it's a point I turn it off & step up the pace to the hound
Fabulous piece of equipment which suit's the range of my boys perfectly

I run a bell on my Tek1. I use a sleigh bell or sheep bell instead of the cleanly cowbell as I like the sound better.

Re: Beeper or bell or...
Bells are way more obnoxious than beepers IMHO....if you run it on the point only mode. I often turn if off remotely, then turn it on to find out where the dog is. I always turn it off once the dog goes on point.

Re: Beeper or bell or...
Although I have the telemetry, I like the Dogtra 2500 on point mode only (depending on the terrain I'm hunting). The incessant ping of a bell drives me crazy and somehow after a certain period of time, my mind shuts it out anyway.....thankfully. Finally, bells don't work when you need them most.
In the most gnarly dense cover, I hunt completely silent but listen for the Dogtra to beep. It reacts faster than the GPS unit and I can turn the noise off remotely the instant I discern it. Ideally, I run both at the same time again, depending on the dog & terrain - GPS + Dogtra.

Tritronics sports combo on my brittany - ecollar plus beeper. I run the beeper all the time. I'm hard of hearing and need all the help I can get keeping track of the dog in the woods. We hunt woodcock, ruffed grouse, rabbits and hare in heavy bush.
