dog box help (Finished)
ok i'm in the process of building my first two hole dog box,it is coming out great just one question, it is plywood with alumaclad on the outside, on the inside i built it to fit two rubber floor mats on the floor,my question is should i seal the inside of the box? if so with what? it will mostly sit inside my van or in my truck with a topper, but sealing it may be a good idea but with what?

Re: dog box help
I have built a couple and sealed them with clear caulk. if for no other reason it makes me feel better. but mine are always out in the weather.

A limit on the strap is nice, but the kill has nothing to do with tradition.
Re: dog box help
we built ours like bookshelves, so the pieces slide into dado joints. This is a pretty tight seal alone... but then we painted it... this actually made it water tight.
PAINT YOU USE MATTERS. Latex paint is not toxic (despite what the greenie weenies say)... Perhaps if a dog drank a gallon it might not be, but just saying. This will keep it holding up to weather to some degree.
On corners (likely chew points), I placed angle aluminum channel, screwed into the wood. The objective (which we are close to), is no edges to start biting the wood... I missed one edge which I aim to fix soon.
Good luck, and post pictures when you're done!

Re: dog box help
I wrapped the door opening with alum channel i don't think their is another place to be chewed on ,i'm just looking fo rsomething to put on the plywood inside to seal it.
Re: dog box help
We painted ours with high gloss white latex paint....2 coats. They get dirty, but I just grab a mop and mop them out. Here's a picture.

Re: dog box help
Seal inside and out. Inside you can minimize odor, staining, moisture getting into the wood etc. I would also use a sealer on the exterior before you install the aluminum clad, just to help reduce moisture absorbtion.
Also make sure the sealer has cured fully and the odor is gone before putting any dogs in there.

Oh and Karen cut up horse stall mats (very heavy) to tightly fit the boxes... it minimizes the drainage with puppy accidents... OH and the puppies go on the bottom until they "like" their crates.

This is my first attempt at building a dog boxs its 44 X 30 X 24 2 stall plywood covered in alumaclad, trim is alum angle and channel, i bought 2 rubber mats for the floor before i started, to keep it clean and dry. also added 4-12volt fans for cooling. let me know what you think!

Re: dog box help (Finished)
Very nicely done.
My only question/comment: Are those door panels removable? Right now with the venting system you have you have not inflow of air or evacuation of air depending which direction of flow of the fans. You should have plenty of open venting available.
but other wise I really like what you did and the apparent quality.
