Re: best 20 gauge for $500?
for quail, pheasant, etc. Pump or semi, it would seem the two Benelli's are favorites.

for quail and pheasant i would buy the older benelli M1 with the synthetic stock, i think you could find one of those for less than $500. the M1 is light, reliable, durable, and comes with a 26" barrel to swing quickly on the quail.
Re: best 20 gauge for $500?
The best one is one that feels good to you and fits you well. Only you can tell. If you have questions go somewhere that has a knowledgeable person on staff that knows how to fit a gun to you. Good luck in your search.

It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!
Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

Re: best 20 gauge for $500?
you are right Ezzy, two I liked the best were the cheapest, Remington 870 and Benelli Supernova & Nova
Re: best 20 gauge for $500?
Don't count Mossberg out of the equation. My Mossy 500 in 20 ga. has been one of the most durable guns I've seen - and it came with a slug bbl too. It's basically been relegated to deer hunting duty, but I can swap out the bbl to the 28" smooth bore at a moment's notice and have an extra gun for a buddy. Check one of those out too. (But I don't think you can go wrong with the Remington either)

The gun that comes up to your shoulder the best and points at what your looking at the best is the gun to buy, whether it's a used or new gun.I have shouldered the charles daly 20 auto that wal-mart carries, and it seems to be a good gun for the money to me.I believe it runs around $325-$350. Again, you will put a lot more birds down with a gun that fits you good, rather than a prettier one that doesn't.
Re: best 20 gauge for $500?
whats a remington 1100 LT go for these days?? mine has served me well for at least 20 years. I think grandpa gave about $400 for it brand new way back when.
Re: best 20 gauge for $500?
The 870 Express with a smooth bore and a rifled barrel for deer hunting will run around 400 dollars and is a good field gun.

Re: best 20 gauge for $500?
thanks ezzy, but my heart was taken by a Citori...next gun will be a pump though and then a semi, but in NJ they treat you like a criminal, you need to give fingerprints just to get an ID card.
Re: best 20 gauge for $500?
If you got a Citori for less than $500 dollars count yourself blessed.
Re: best 20 gauge for $500?
no lol, originally i set a budget of $500 then i kinda got hooked on some more expenses choices, came down to the Citori and a couple of the Berretta 0/U.
i probably will get a semi at some point...and a used pump for the kids to learn on.
i am on a buy american kick so I went with the Browning...i was amazed how much control the Berretta family has on the industry, its quite amazing.
The Cynergy was pretty nice as well.

Aren't Brownings made in Japan?mcbosco wrote:i am on a buy american kick so I went with the Browning...i was amazed how much control the Berretta family has on the industry, its quite amazing.
Re: best 20 gauge for $500?
i really don't know where it was made, but i do know the first ones were made in japan, then some in belgium...i will have to check..its at my weekend house i am in NYC tonight.
Re: best 20 gauge for $500?
actually it is made in japan, well its an American company at least!!!!!
Re: best 20 gauge for $500?
Brownings were made in Belguim for mny years and then went to Japan. If you are going to buy American you better stick with Remington or Winchester as far as the better guns go.

Re: best 20 gauge for $500?
and Winchester is part of the Browning group I think. I saw some nice Remington pumps from the 1950's this weekend for about $900. They were in perfect condition.
Re: best 20 gauge for $500?
I think the Ruger red labels are made in America also. I here you on the Berettas, been lusting after a 28 gauge for a while, they are nice.
Re: best 20 gauge for $500?
I've had a Mossberg 500 20 guage since the early 70's and it's a great little gun. I still think that the Remington 870 is the most trusty pump though. I don't have a 20 but my 12 has sure put alot of birds in the bag.

Re: best 20 gauge for $500?
That is weird because my brother picked up a Browning SX3 last year and it was made in Belgium not Japan. I thought that the best guns were made in Belgium. But what do I know I shoot and 870 and smoke him with his SX3.

Re: best 20 gauge for $500?
Both Browning and Winchester are now part of the Herstal Group, but the SX3 is a Winchester model. Here's everything you would want to know: http://www.fnherstal.com/index.php?id=161
I have a relatively new Citori 525 Field in 16 gauge made by Miroku in Japan. The fit an finish are perfect; and while the Belgian Brownings tend to command higher resale values, they both go "bang" and are very well made.
All these companies have been in business for over a hundred years, and you don't stay in business that long by making junk.
