Remington 870 express combo

Post by dudley » Sat Dec 22, 2007 8:45 am

for my b-day yesterday it got a remington 870 express combo with the 20 rifle sights barell the only problem is that it's a smooth bored barell and not the rifled one, i was just wondering whether people thought it would be worth chaging the barell for a rifled version or if i should just use rifled slugs in it. Whats the real difference in accuracy at around 50-75 yrds? thanks.

Very little and a lot cheaper.

It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!

Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

That barrel should be good to 100 yards, play around with different slugs. Sabots will not work so stick to rifled slugs. I have not been in rifled slugs for a long time but I use to use Winchester's and had good luck with them, Brenneke also makes a good one, Remington make a few rifled but I never liked them.

Look at the ballistics on the box and sight in accordingly.

Yep...these guys are right....the trick is finding the slug that shoots best from it. I've had good luck with the Remington Sluggers in some.....when they wouldn't even hit the same target twice in others. Buy a few boxes of the cheapes rounds....start at about 40yds and you'll find one that works in no time.

I put together a "Jersey Rifle" - a Remington 1100 with the stock cut to a 13-1/4" LOP and recoil pad added, a Hastings Paradox fully rifled barrel with cantilever scope mount topped with a Simmons Aetec 2.8 x 10x scope. It will put 3 rounds of Winchester Supreme 12 ga Partition Gold sabot slugs in a 1" circle at 100 yards.

Great, huh? Well, I don't even use it anymore. The rounds cost about $3.50 each, so very time I pull the trigger it's like throwing a Grande Latte down range at 1900 fps. What's more, it kicks harder than my 30-06. So I use my T/C Encore .50 cal muzzleloader all the time now.

There is nothing wrong with the smooth bore and rifled slugs - you can buy a box a 15 for about $7 at Cabela's. The secret to smooth bore accuracy with slugs is to clean the barrel every three shots with a bronze wire or "tornado" bore brush to remove any leading or fouling. I got this tip from a guy I met at the range who was getting groups as good as mine with a smooth bore.

i was told that with the smooth bore the best i could hope for was around a 3" group at 50 yards and that it would be horible at 100

Like I said, I watched the guy shoot awesome groups with a smooth bore. I'd suggest you try it first - and I'd also suggest doing what I saw the guy do with keeping the bore brushed clean.

Take your time and let the barrel cool down too. You don't stand in the woods and shoot a deer from a hot barrel!

Remington makes a rifled choke tube. It works. I didn't believe it but when I ordered a slug barrel for my 11-87 it came as a smooth bore with rifled rem choke. I wanted to send it back but was talked into trying it.

I'll never trade.
