[quote="Rodger"] I agree, it'll be interesting, but both judges will have to come to terms on placements. If any placements were to be withheld, it would be the first time in about 7 years I believe.
I know that John Steiger has believed that a few AA AKC placements should have been withheld, but instead a dog that basically ran a shooting dog race got put up. He told Ronnie Sale i believe that it would never happen when he judged. We all know there are some dogs that can lay down an AA performance from time to time, and then there are a few that lay it down all the time. In my opinion, Steiger has handled and won too many AA dogs to placements or championships in both AKC and AF to even take a glance a dog that does not meet the criteria that an AA dog should have to even be in the event. But, with different Judges, maybe ones that are a little more on the show side or even soft, a shooting dog might get an AA title. All im saying is that probably won't happen with Steiger being one of the Judges. I applaud the fact that AKC chose him for a judge for the AA, he definately is qualified to judge it.

GSP, Before you get too excited about the AKC. It is actually the GSPCA NFT Committee that selects the judges each year. They simply have to be certified with the AKC and deemed appropriate by the NFT committee. Dennis Brath would have the final say so, as he's the committee chairman. Couldn't ask for a better person to oversee it than Dennis. He knows as much about the game as anyone around and works his arse off from start to finish to make it a success each year. All im saying is that probably won't happen with Steiger being one of the Judges. I applaud the fact that AKC chose him for a judge for the AA, he definately is qualified to judge it.

GSP, No doubt your local Shorthair club would be more than happy to help you become better acquainted... and in a heartbeat!I am not that familiar with the politics of how these events get organized.
Otherwise don't be too concerned. I'm still learning myself.

Flash was lost. Nuke is retired due to injury and surgery. AA will finish tomorrow, Saturday. Steger is the same as he has always been. Eldon sustained a broken rib and could not handle for the AA, so Keith Richardson and I handled our own dogs in the NC. I got Spot around, had one gorgeous limb find, but he shortened when the course turned into the wind. Cutter and Ricky are the odds on favorites for a placement right now. Still several dogs to go. Probably three braces tomorrow.

Hey Chip - I'd love to have a big GSP trial out this way. I'm real interested in some sort of "endurance" event where the ultimate winner proves itself over a few days. I like the format of the Nat'l Am. Invitational and think a GSP trial like that would be very cool. The top 12 Am. handled GSP's based on NGSPA pts. invited. 6 braces run on Friday and the only way a dog gets tossed out is to pick up/ask for the Tracker. Invert the braces and run 'em again on Saturday. Judges pick top two or four to run 1.5 or 2 hour braces on Sunday. I'd love to participate in something like that as an Am. if I had a dog that could get me there.
As far as the current Nat'ls (GSPCA and NGSPA) sounds like folks are pretty content with 'em and huge pats on the back to the dedicated individuals that year after year put in the effort to pull it off. Neither Nat'l Ch. sound like my cup of tea, there are other trials I'd rather participate in and maybe win, but dang, I'd sure put the trophy on my mantle and be dang proud if one of my mutts ever won one!

We rode the brace 21, we were riding with Keith's dog who got lost, and if I remember correctly, Dan elected to pick the dog up (or it was lost) I can't remember which one, we watched a couple of Dan's dogs as well. We just got in this evening from Eureka. Had a good weekend, with Buck taking 3rd in the all age. Received our first "pig"! It is a special thing that Steager gives out to dogs who he thinks does well, used to be a big deal between some of those guys. Was pretty neat to listen to him talk about it! It will go on the trophy base as well.
They had ran three braces of the open gun dog on Sat. and we watched two more this morning, they were on the third as we were leaving. Can't remember exact braces, but know that Dan Hoke was running in the last brace this evening.
Thanks for all the congrats guys. Congrats to all the others as well.

Mark Wasserman and Cutter will be getting the double dog trophy, the mold was broken so it was being reset and will be sent, just an fyi for those wondering why there isn't a double dog there.

There was quite a wind on the second day and wind on the third day also. At least one of the judges wanted to stop running until the wind let up, but you really can't do that in Kansas, you don't know if the wind will ever stop. Lots of dogs went short when they turned into the wind. Only Ricky was used from the third day. But there is no reason to complain about it, that is the way field trialing works. Luck of the draw. It certainly does not detract from the winner's performances, they were good by any measure.

Well, I had a report on where they were starting tomorrow, and now I can not remember if they are starting with brace 18 or if they finished 18, but that is where they are in the open gun dog. They have had a few go around clean, not doing call backs or dog of the day I guess, they have shot over a couple dogs whose handlers were having to leave. Looking like a possible Thurs. finish.

It was my first time at the nationals and I got to see some great dogs and dog work. I also had the opportunity to meet some of the top trainers such as Eldon Hongo, Rich Barber, Dan Hoke and the Gulledges as well as others and some of our frequent posters such as Jerry (Hotpeper), Nancy (NRCGSP) and John Lunseth (Wagonmaster).
They were uniformly gracious and informative to a novice and I would like to say Thank You! to each of them.
If you ever have the chance to go you should, the worst you are going to do is meet some awfully nice people.

I haven't gotten a chance to meet the Gulledges or Nancy and no doubt they fall into the awfully nice people group.
Those other characters you mention meeting though, I've been around those fellars - they weren't letting them into the social gatherings were they?
Hey John, I think we all are willing to take our lumps at field trials due to luck of the draw but IMO, at the big trials, ("the Nat'ls is a trial some folks dream of winning for a lifetime) to essentially have their dog(s) be eliminated due to weather just doesn't seem fair. I know when the Nat'l Chukar championships are hosted out here, we've waited days before for weather to "even out" since the club didn't want to "be in the business" of eliminating dogs which is essentially what happens when they force 'em to run in horrible conditions. Just food for thought I guess...referring mainly to Open stakes. Amateur stakes, unfortunately, many times you do just have to get 'em done so folks can get home.
My common sense approach to weather at a trial and whether to delay or not - would I be out hunting in this weather?? If the answer is "no" then why the heck would I expect anybody else to be!

Well, that was pretty much exactly the debate. But if you wait for the wind to lay down in Kansas, you are going to wait a loooooong time. And it is a very big trial, three weeks already. Stick in another three weeks to wait for the wind, and people are going to spend most of their lives at that trial. Everybody going knows it happens.

Steiger wwould only do 6 braces a day, 3 in the morning and 3 in the afternoon. The day the wind was blowing so badly he was protesting very strongly to stop the running for the day and it did not stop.
The fact that it lasts for so long is a factor in the decisions that cause it to keep going. Another is the weekend trial mentality of we have to be out of here on Sunday and back to work on Monday. Push, push, push.
There are a lot of people that come a very long way, from California, Washington, Florida, Connecticut and there is just a mood to push all the time with the folks that run it.
The wind on the 1st day was brutal by 10AM.

It was nice to meet you as well Ken. I really enjoyed the time at nationals catching up with some you don't see for a year and others you converse with on here and then actually get the chance to meet and get to know a little better! It was nice to get to know Jerry better as well.
That wind in KS is brutal at times. Jerry said that the wind picked a great deal the first day as well. I know Cutter and Buck both ran on the first day. Cutter was teh first brace, but Buck didn't run until the 3rd brace, so he was running about the time the wind got fierce.

Certainly if you've already got a couple dogs, that despite horrible conditions, put in winning performances, it's pretty hard to justify holding up the show. Good logic in that. Of course, theoretically, the only ones that know if they've got a winning dog is the judges so there is probably some value in listening to their desires also. Sheesh, glad I was just out hunting!!That wind in KS is brutal at times. Jerry said that the wind picked a great deal the first day as well. I know Cutter and Buck both ran on the first day. If your dog can't run in the wind don't bother coming to Kansas. A 15 to 20 is considered light winds here. Saturday in the 2nd series of the Am it was blowing to 30mph and 83 degrees. Two of the dogs that placed ran that afternoon including Millie who I was braced with. She had a nice forward race and a find or two. Kate my dog ran well but couldn't come up with a bird. The day Steger wanted to cancel the running of the All Age it was blowing pretty hard from the north, which is much better from the south. It should keep the dogs from going north to the koch ranch. Handlers are mostly north of where the dog should be running and I feel the can hear you singing to them.
No one wants to run in the wind, but where do you draw the line?

Unless it's lighting and storming, I think tink you just have to make the best of whatever is delt ya and hope for the best. If it's not ideal, then maybe next year or after that. Your never going to have a perfect level playing field in these games. Hopefully the judges take things into consideration when evaluating performances and will put up the right dogs.
Sounds like Cutter did a h3ll of a job! Congrats on his big win Mark!

Couldn't agree more. I've had to handle, scout, and even judge in conditions so horrible no sane person would be out hunting in them! You have to judget he dogs before you, on the day they run, in the conditions presented. As a handler you take the draw you get and run your dogs no matter what the conditions as long as the judges are willing to continue.Rodger wrote:Unless it's lighting and storming, I think tink you just have to make the best of whatever is delt ya and hope for the best. The only exception typically is when conditions are threatening to the life and health of the humans involved and more often than not we go until it's just impossible to continue.
If that weren't the case we'd end up cancelling or postponing so many stakes that field trials in the middle and western parts of the country would be next to impossible.CR
There's a reason I like dogs better'n people
