Nat'l Amatuer Chukar Shooting Dog Championship

Post by DGFavor » Tue Apr 17, 2007 4:40 pm

Just got back from a nice weekend over at the Milepost 9 grounds doing the Nat'l Amateur Chukar Shooting Dog championship. The weather was pretty decent but typical for the area and time of year, changing from moment to moment. They had excellent, experienced judges and alot of good dogs. Just good fun to be part of it. Here's a few pics - thought they'd come out a little better but I was clicking away off horseback so not as good as I'd have liked - hard to get dogs, horses, people to stop/point/ride where the light gives the best pics:

Judges - Jerry Lewis and Rich Robertson, Sr.:

Looking for a dog out there somewhere:

And, here he is:

Hard to see the dog here but this is a pretty typical find on these grounds:

It's a challenging but fun place to get out and ride:

2007 Nat'l Am Chukar SD Champion - Idaho's Lucky Lady, owned/handled by Rich Heaton (standing between the judges). I managed to get my mug in the winner's photo being the trusty scout:

Way cool pics :!: Looking foward to the up coming AKC and Region 9 trials.

Are those dogs only hunting wild birds or do they plant birds? In the Amature Chukar SD Championship and Region 9 that is?

Big congrats to Rich too

Most finds at this trial were on planted birds but I know we had a few finds on native birds also - Stitch had a native pair of chukars on his first find, Rich's dog Sadie had a cool find on a native pair of chukars, and one of Tom Griffin's setters had a very classy find on a single sage hen. I know they had some real nice sage hen points in the NW Chukar All Age and I did ride up some huns out scouting.

The planted birds flew great if you could find them scurrying around. They were some running machines. I saw a few times guys end up with NP's despite several gallery members seeing the birds running but the handlers couldn't put 'em up and the judges didn't see em. My dog had a decent outing going with 3 finds then two NP's that put him out at 53" - the closest I've come to finishing a stake all spring and you better believe I went on an extended hunting mission during that last NP to no avail!! After I gave it up, the gallery told me a pair of huns had flushed out above me during the relocation but I never saw 'em. :D

The courses are different for the AKC and Reg. 9 GSP trials. Usually there are not as many native bird contacts but last year we did have finds on native chukars, huns, quail and sage hen. Guess we'll see...I sure didn't see much for birds down on that end of the grounds last week though.

At the Region 8/Hun Championships I discovered that if you want to get one of those planted birds in the air in those rocks, you need to pick up a couple of stones to toss at them. If you try run them down they will just beat you.

Congrats again to Richy! See you guys Tues.

Thanks for the congrats John! She did a real nice job and glad to be part of it.

Look forward to seeing you. Throw in clothing for about any weather conditions. Monday we trained in shirtsleeves...today I had snow piled up at the back door. Good chance it'll just do more of the same this time of year. Let me know if there's anything we can do to help you out, get you around town, up to the grounds, whatever. I'll have to skeedaddle on Wed. to get home and prep for our trial down here.

Well then, I will feel right at home. Thanks for the offer on helping me get around, but I am going to stay in Nampa on Rich's suggestion, and will have a car.

Casper, hope you can make it too. Would be pleased to meet you.

Doug,

Incredible pictures! I can't even imagine running my Pointers on land like that. They would be in heaven. Beautiful country!

Best of luck in your trial.

Looking at the forecast, should be typical spring weather for the upcoming week John - so anybody's guess, prepare for anything!!

Today Alex and I had about every type of weather from snow, sand blasing pellets, to sunny skies out training...we also had the muthaload of sharpies which was fun. Probably our last day out on them till August so good day to end on.
