South Dakota Intro-Gibson-Deb and "Cody"

Post by FFMSbrittany » Mon Feb 22, 2021 12:05 pm

Good morning and thanks to all in advance. My wife Debbie and I have brought home our first Brittany pup (Cody)for hunting in South Dakota. I have zero experience with upland bird training and have had the privilege to train and own a Chesapeake Bay Retriever back in 1999-2010. She was amazing and taught me a lot. My understanding is that our Brittany "Cody" can be trained to operate in the waterfowl environment as well. I am grateful for the opportunity to share in this journey and learn from those that have this experience.

Best to all,
Gibson

I had a female Brittany that absolutely loved the water, great swimmer. But the Brittany is far from a waterfowl dog. As long as the temps and water is not too cold they can be trained to retrieve waterfowl, but in cold weather they are not your dog. While some Brittanys, like the one I had, love water the breed was never meant to be used on waterfowl. Where are you located?

Welcome to the forum. I think you'll find that Brit are far more softer in their training than a Chessy. They do real well with praise not disciplin. Good luck.
