What am I?

Post by Trutta » Fri Mar 15, 2019 3:52 am

Hey Gang,
So this pointer has come through our EP rescue and is now in my care as a foster, but for some reason I'm not feeling EP, could this be a GSP without a docked tail or possibility a mix? She has a silky smooth coat with very fine hair (a lot different than our EPs) and a narrow muzzle. She could very well be 100% EP and maybe I'm just not feeling it for some strange reason. Thanks!

To me it looks like it could be a cross of both pointer and gsp, her head looks similar to a GSP (to me) by the way she stands up on her toes and her height she reminds me of English pointer. Just a couple of observations! Could be completely wrong, that's why we like to see the papers and not have to guess. Nice looking dog though. :)

Having had 8 or so fosters in the last couple years, mostly GWP's and GSP's with two that the rescue made a judgement call error on the thumbnail pics, I'll tell you that the temperament is what should tell you the most.

As long as you're not breeding her for big bucks, she points and retrieves birds, and she gets a good home, what difference does it make who mommy and daddy were.

It makes no difference who mom and dad were I was just curious and what better place to ask than a gun dog forum. She has some really strong prey drive, but at this point she is so damaged that getting behind a gun ain’t going to happen for awhile. The best I can do is give her some skills and hopefully work her through some of her issues.

Seen some freaky looking GSP and a few GWP. Come to think about it, seen some freaky all sorts of Pedigree dogs.
Your one looks healthy and fit enough , work with what you have and train it...The result of the training will define what it is.

I hear you. I have an ex-foster that spent the winter pointing game farm pheasants for her new owners (when she wasn’t being dressed up by her new “mom”), a nice retired couple, and he’s asking me about training her for duck hunting. I spent my time potty training her and socializing her to do things like stairs.

Some of them your just trying to socialize and repair their mental health to the point they can be left alone and be a nice pet. I have one that I never could teach to sit...but he Had finer qualities that endeared him to his current home. Oddly enough that one was really steady and had a cool point though he worked at 40 yards the whole time; he also didn’t know how to swim. Walked off a dock and sank. Only time I ever swam to save a dog.

The funnest part of fostering is that everyone is a unique challenge and it’s on you to get them to where they’re adoptable to love with people.

Would a DNA test help?

Head looks like gsp. Heads vary a bit with gsp's. Typical patch at the base of the tail also. A lot of the white gsp's have a really soft fine coat.
Quite a bit of leg and neck. Looks young with not much chest yet. Most happy shorthairs don't spend much time with their tail hanging like that though.
Hope you find a great home for it.

I am not at all sure about the head but her neck and her stance make me think there is maybe a dose of greyhound in there ?

Bill T is on to something. That’s why I asked what part of the country she’s from. 1/4 shorthair 1/4 greyhound 1/2 bull terrier makes a Bull Arab. I think personally, she was bred by wild boar hunters.

Despite her looks, her personality is starting to show EP. I think her looks are do to her emaciated state. I'll revisit this thread once we get her fattened up.

Striking-looking dog. Post more when you get her in condition. Where did you get her? DNA test are not expensive,if it matters to you.

If you scroll the second picture to cover the head and just expose the body and guess . She look's a little like a great dane.

I don't see GSP, but, there are some odd looking GSPs out there.

I'll guess pointer x some sort of sight hound.
