Field Trial Question
Field Trial Question
I'm going to start doing field trials with my pup who turns 6 months this weekend. I want to run her in the puppy stakes and noticed there are amateur and open puppy stakes. Is there any reason I would enter a pup in the open stakes if I'm not a pro trainer, etc.?

Re: Field Trial Question
SURE ...experience for you and the pup. There are probably not a lot of Pros running puppies. At that level it is about the dog and not much about what the handlers really do. Go do it...run in both Amateur and Open. Even at the Derby and SD levels I am not sure why amateurs get gun shy to run against the Pros. You learn SO much, the Pros are usually inviting, and again...it is about the dogs. The dogs have NO clue if you are in an Open or Am stake. Every dog has it's day. The reason you see Pros winning a lot is because that is their job and they probably bring the majority of the entries. That is NOT to say an amateur cant bring the same QUALITY of dog to the line. Ask Mr. F. Miller or Sean Derrig or Gary Lester, or Allen Dunbar, or Gary Vitali or MANY cover dog guys/gals, or...YOU! We have a lot of Amateurs here in WI that can compete anywhere. What trials are you looking to enter?RichK wrote:Is there any reason I would enter a pup in the open stakes if I'm not a pro trainer, etc.?

Wooster, OH
Oakridge Pointing Dog in PA
Flaherty in CT
I'm in NY so I believe those are the closest and I would like to try to get 2 points on the pup in puppy stakes.

Many amateur's
have more success then the Pros. Run your dog, have fun and learn.

Also consider the Setter Club in Medford NJ. If you have a big running independent puppy the grounds give you a little peace of mind as it is almost entirely fenced with pasture wire.

Re: Field Trial Question
Run the open while you're running your pup, if you happen to be braced with a more experienced handler watch and learn. Heck I do the same when I am paired with other amateurs, I've got a lot to learn about being a good handler. I have learned a lot from watching the successful guys that run in my area.
And by all means, run the dog in the open if you want to.

Re: Field Trial Question
Amateur puppy and or derby stakes are walking stakes.
Open puppy and or derby stakes are usually horseback stakes- however you CAN walk in them.
Agree with everyone that you should enter both open and amateur if given the chance. The one good thing about the open stakes and being braced with a Pro- I believe you run less risk of your brace mate tagging and wanting to play. Or if they do, the Pro will try their best to put a stop to it as quick as possible. Sometimes Amateurs either don't know how to do that, or allow it to continue too long.
The fun about running puppies- it's hard to get mad at them, so just have some fun.

Re: Field Trial Question
This is an all walking trial no HB stakes so there won't be many if any pros running any dogs but there are amateur handlers that are as good as the pros so go get your feet wet & have fun & LEARN!!

Re: Field Trial Question
Where in NY are you. There is a Field Trial Labor Day Weekend in Norwich NY. I'll be there and there are many others that would be willing to help you. That is where I got my start and it was the Judges that helped me the most. Great Trial and Great People.

Re: Field Trial Question
Sorry Sharon, it came across a little different than that to me. No biggie, that's why I hate texting, emails, blogging......it is too easy to misinterpret what is actually being said.
Re: Field Trial Question
No problem. You should know me by now; I'm a BIG field trial fan/used to be participant for years.
Re: Field Trial Question
Anyone else hear that the trial next weekend in Norwich, NY is cancelled?
Re: Field Trial Question
Yes, it's posted as cancelled on the ABC website.
