Minimum Rest Time Between Braces - AKC Trial?
Minimum Rest Time Between Braces - AKC Trial?
Is there a minimum rest time or braces in between running that the AKC dictates? Got a drawing 2nd to last brace then first brace in the next stake after it. If that last dog busts I'm pretty screwed. I'd prefer at least 90mins of down time for the dog...

Nope. You always run the risk of back to back braces when you enter the same dog in 2 stakes being run the same day.

Bummer - I'll give him a fatty snack and dump water on him - oh well.

You might look at a maltodextrin booster instead of fat. If you want fat, I'd go non-animal, like a PBJ sammy.

Can you recommend something with the maltodextrin and how much should I give?Cajun Casey wrote:You might look at a maltodextrin booster instead of fat. If you want fat, I'd go non-animal, like a PBJ sammy.

I would get NutriCal or NutriStat. Give a couple of ounces, tablespoon at a time about ten minutes apart. A tablespoon is a good squeeze of the tube. There are some good water add-ins, but the gel is easier to get in the dog.bb560m wrote:Can you recommend something with the maltodextrin and how much should I give?Cajun Casey wrote:You might look at a maltodextrin booster instead of fat. They're half hour braces. If you're worried, the dog isn't in proper condition. If you do get 90 minutes down time, get the dog up and moving 15/20 minutes before you go. I'd prefer back to back, maybe 5-10 minutes max between.

Enervite is another brand. You can get them anywhere that sells pet supplies. Check by the supplements or milk replacer.

He is in good enough shape, I'd just prefer he rested. Going to be 70+ when he runs too. With a little sugar and water I'm not too worried about him being dead tired, just would rather have a longer rest.Wyndancer wrote:They're half hour braces. Thanks - I have NutriCal - didn't know it had that in it. I'll bring it along. Would you recommend giving it to him right after his first run, then another little bit 10 mins later (20 mins before his 2nd run)?Cajun Casey wrote:I would get NutriCal or NutriStat. Wet him down before his first run.

I don't typically see a big slowdown in my dogs till they hit the 15-20 mile range, depending on the temps this is genaerally in the 1.5 to 2 hr range. I will run them like this for up to 3 days in a row. I would not be worried about 1/2 hr stakes the dog should be just warming up after the first 1/2 hr.

x4. That being said, if it is a young dog maybe its something to be concerned with. A mature properly conditioned adult dog it shouldnt matter.slistoe wrote:

OK ok - he'll be fine. No need for an x5!

+1 If the dog is properly conditioned it shouldnt be a problem at all. Keepo him staked out and out of the dog box so he doesnt get all stiff.Wyndancer wrote:They're half hour braces. Who needs the rest? I find it 's me and not the dog if you are talking about 30 minute stakes.

Ran him twice tonight with a 30 min break. No issues .
