Top 5 Reasons Why Dog Training Fails
Approximately 90% of dog training efforts fail. It's not your fault! Here are the Top Five reasons dog training fails:
1. Not having an accurate mental model or paradigm of dogs.
There exists a deeply-held (yet erroneous) belief that training a dog should be easy and not take much time. Almost every one has had a dog in their life, so how can it be that complicated? Most dog training efforts do not work because dogs are very different from us. They don't think the way we do, learn the way we do, see the world the way we do, or have the complex emotional life we do. This means, when communicating with and training dogs, you need a counter-intuitive approach. In other words, those 'gut feelings' you have about how to train your dog are probably wrong. If you have tried to stop your dog from barking by scolding him, or tried to stop him from pulling by yanking on the leash, you know this.
2. Not having a trustworthy source
Most dog parents don't know where to turn for help. The problem is, there are so many trainers and training resources, it's difficult to know who can really help you, and how much that should cost.
3. Difficulty implementing dog training protocol
Most 'professional' training methods are difficult to transfer to dog parents. There are almost as many 'methods' as there are trainers. It is difficult to follow the sometimes complicated and vast instructions dog parents can obtain from training books, personal trainers, and training classes.
4. Lack of trust in training method
Confusion exists over contradictory opinions and methods about dog training. Often, when confronted with contradictory advice, dog parents do nothing, or choose one avenue with little trust or commitment. Without trust that what you are doing will work, it usually doesn't.
5. Lack of standardized knowledge base of dogs
Anyone can claim anything about training dogs. There is no significant research to determine conclusively which methods or philosophies of dog training work best, which are unnecessary, and which are abusive.

Re: Top 5 Reasons Why Dog Training Fails
wonder if Marybeth is in to bird dogs or just trying to promote cute doggie items
So Marybeth
What training program and poor teacher are you speaking of
can you explain how that fancy collar your order is going to help you in the field with the key part here BIRD DOG training
what kind of dog do you have upland water dog or versatile
so where do you live where 90 percent of the hunting dogs fail to become trained hunters
and that the doggie parent  can't find a good source to learn how to help their dog learn to hunt birds
or are you talking about unruley house dogs where the doggie parents insist on treating their dogs like human children
just trying to figure out where your coming from cause your post again is far from field and bird dog related

Re: Top 5 Reasons Why Dog Training Fails
I don't know if you know that you're on a hunting dog forum. When I look at your website, there is not one dvd or product I see for gun dogs.
We have several thorough and easy to follow hunting dog programs available through this forum.
I wouldn't say you're lost, I just don't think you realize where you are.
Or this is a shameless attempt to see products without paying Grant for the right to do so.

Re: Top 5 Reasons Why Dog Training Fails
Guess what the proven methods are shown to be proven by titles, successful hunt test, & birds in the bag, happy owners etc.. The trusted trainers and training DVDs are the ones with proven results. The references good and bad are put forth by our piers.
As a person trains more dogs and watches more dogs work, we start thinking like a dog, what just happened in the dogs eyes, what will our dog understand to correct this etc. A good trainer understands dogs, mostly.
I would be willing to bet that the trainers that put at a minimum of 20 dogs through a training program each year (many do more than that) can tell you what percentage of dogs will not be bird dogs, (not able to be). They can give you a percentage that would equate to the washouts. I bet it is more like 10% would be wash outs (that may be high).

Re: Top 5 Reasons Why Dog Training Fails
ok definately seems to be some shameless advertising going on here and the advice seems to be aimed at newbie pet owners.
I will say that before berating her too much for not realizing the company she is in, take a moment to appreciate the company that we keep here. I doubt anybody who frequents this site much falls into the category of 90% of dog owners. Probably quite a few regulars on here who fall into the 1% group. Even newbie first time posters are likely to be above average dog owners. Or at least soon to be.

Re: Top 5 Reasons Why Dog Training Fails
I think the reason many house hold pets have serious issues and the doggie owners have problems with their pets
is directly related to they view the dogs as children and not as pets
so they think they can reason with their dogs into good behavior and that no pull collars is the answer to to the problem not how they handle the dog in the first place
what you allow a dog to do you train a dog to do and many average pet owners think it is cruel to correct a dog and then get their panties in a bunch when they figure out they can't love their dogs into good behavior ..dogs can not rationlize and saddly neither can many of their companion pet owners

Exactly. And yet she refers to "dog parents." :roll:kninebirddog wrote: I think the reason many house hold pets have serious issues and the doggie owners have problems with their pets

So what do you all think are the Top 5 Reasons?
Here's what I think-
1) Not having a plan or goal.
2) Not understanding where the dog is at/what level. (Progressing too fast/slow, leaving gaps.)
3) Not putting consistent time/effort into training.
4) Not having any knowledge of or recognizing a difference in animal behavior, leading to anthromorphism.
5) Not taking advantage of available support/networks for training.
Have at it!

The dogs have us feeding them, housing them, grooming them, hunting them, paying the bills for them, etc.
I'd say that they have us pretty well trained.
Re: Top 5 Reasons Why Dog Training Fails
That they do, 3Britts.
Yeah, that lady's percentage may be way off............ I won't even attempt to correct it. People often 'train' their dogs without even knowing it because of they reward/response to certain actions.
So how about the top reasons for if/when a person does isn't successful at dog training? I know we don't need a list- we sometimes see reasons/examples here. Anything helpful might make this thread title not such a waste. I know I read it thinking I'd read a refresher of what-not-to-do's.

She lost me on 'dog parent.' It reminds me of the time a vet tech asked me if I was 'the mother of the patient.' My answer was "Lord I hope not!! What sicko would bring a child to a vet for medical attention!? I am the OWNER of the DOG."

Re: Top 5 Reasons Why Dog Training Fails
I will give her this, I have seen a lot of poorly trained dogs. There are a lot of dogs that are ruined by people who have no idea what they are doing and then give up, and to many times you can find these dogs at the local dog pound. Sad but true! I also reconize that this does not apply to most people who read this site.

Well Marybeth has had 3 posts on the forum 2 of them offering unsolicited advice and the other trying to sell a product on her website. Take it for what its worth she is only promoting her website.

But feeding the trolls is so easy! They'll eat what the pigs left over.
Re: Top 5 Reasons Why Dog Training Fails
Number one reason dog training is not succesful is the person doing to training. Alot of people like to make excuses but it is 90 percent thier fault amd from what I have seen mostly because of lazy humans that don't or won't put in the time required to do it right.

Got a PM from the OP. Seems the content and purpose of this forum was completely unknown to her until after she posted. It was asked that the post be deleted, but I think a simple lock will suffice.
