please help with weim
I have recently took in a 1 yr old male weimarener. He was a stray that I found on a rexcue site. He has been a very good dog for me, he sits, stays, heels, and listens to me very well, for only having hime for 3 weeks. One problem though. He as very bad anxiety issues. Whatever crate i put him in when I leave he breaks out of. He doesnt harm anything in the house, but I want to get him trained to a crate in case I go somewhere with him. Anyone have any suggestions for me. Thanks.

you could try one of those metal crates that you can get at any pet store to start with. The dog being able to see all around him might keep him from getting scared. They are also good for running a check cord through the back clip it to his collar then tell him kennel and gently pull him into the crate give a treat and/or praise him but make him stay in in it for a moment then let him out on a release command (alright). Do this over and over again till you have him staying in there for some time.
Also do as Tak said run him hard in the late evening and let him get real tired after he has had a good drink of water you could put him in the crate and sit next to it till he falls asleep. Make it a good experience!

Another suggestion along the same lines, is to just put him in the crate for a short while at various times of the day and stay there with him. That will tell you right off if he's got a crate issue or a separation anxiety issue.
Then you can work from there.

Same problem
I have a Weimador (lab/weim cross) did the same thing. She distroied two crates. It is a weimer thing her father did it too from talking to the guy. The anxiety I hate to say goes with the breed from the hound in them.I'm not B.S.ing you he thinks he is basicly beside himself when you are gone, try leaving him out, to say protect the house every other day and he may be alright then to crate. You might find a breed book from walden's books like I did since I had only been around the breed twice before getting even a halfbreed. It explained a lot of the breeding of weims and history which has help to explain my dogs mannerisms. Oh my cousin-in-law learned the hard way they if left alone they will dismantle A/C units to the house or siding from a house when left a lone from their pack(your family) to long(anxeity)

Try this.
Hey, go to a petsmart or one of those stores and get a Kabonk or Kazonk rubber toy. They have all sizes, the toy is cone shaped with a hole in it to stuff with doggiebiscuts and peanutbutter to keep dogs busy while in a crate or at home when you need alone time.I forgot till I saw ours in the yard this morning I remeber it helping and it was funny to watch my dog and see how long it would take her to get just treats out of it.
