Pointing Pigeons

Post by Ryan » Thu Jun 02, 2005 9:26 am

Hey I got another question.
How would I get my dog to point pigeons. I am not sure if she will. I was thinking of holding one in my hand and letting her sniff it for a min then throwing it up in the air and shooting it. Allowing her to retrieve. Think she would get the hint and point them?

first off,,do not use a gun,,..next,,,a dog will point, much like a cat will crouch,,as they are afraid the bird is going to get away...
I would suggest you look someone up who is experienced with
pointing dogs....the one thing you absoulutely do not want,is for anything negative to happen to your dog,,while around birds,,
especially an inexperienced dog...
You need to be able to read your dogs attitudes,,,to know how to approach planting birds,,,you might need to give him a dead bird,,
or use small birds like quail,,as to not startle him....
A big old pigeon flushing can scare a dog pretty badly if they are a soft dog...
The love of birds is at the heart of being able to train any dog...
so be carefull, with how you introduce birds to your dog...

Larue I appreciate your input but Bailey is 5 years old and has been hunting all 5 of them years she isnt a beginner dog that needs to be introduced to to birds or guns. I should have stated this in my first post it is my mistake. I am doing this because I want some good pictures of bailey pointing and for practice in the "off season" Why would I look someone up when i got all the help i need right here. Plus I have all my hunting friends and a few guys that have hunt tested their dog so I am well off. I just want to know how the heck i am going to get bailey to point pigeons.

what you are wanting to do should work fine but you dont need to kill the pigeon for her to like it. let her smell it then let it fly, you could do this with a few pigeons then put one in a launcher and walk her up she will likly point. pigeons give off good scent so dogs like them very much. Jon Han of perfection kennels does this to introduce puppys to birds
good luck post the pics asap. also if you know of someone that knows something about taking a good pic might be a good help. there also might be someone on this site that could help you out. all I know is to use early morning or late evening lighting conditions something about the horizontal rayz highlight color better

Once my dogs have pointed the real thing "Quail" some just won't have much to do with pidgeons........

But I do use pidegeons for training purposes with all my young dogs.......They have a good scent and are good flyers.

Plant the bird in some brush and treat it like any other game bird. They have a scent and the dog should point it naturally. They shouldn't need a introduction to them.

Ryan have you tryed putting a pigeon in your launcher hiding it then walking her up on to it. I sure want to see a good pic of her pointing, those red setters are sure pretty dogs!
