Peta vs Westminster
Ok I'm not real big on dog shows but if I catch Westminster on T.V. I won't change the channel. A couple weeks ago I got an e-mail from my mother enlightening me to that PETA was going after the USA network pretty hard to drop their coverage of the event. So I dropped the USA Network an e-mail in support of their coverage of the dog show and hadn't thought much more about it untill I recieved another e-mail today. This one caught my attention enough to post here.

PETA Calls On TransUnion, Memory Bridge to Pull Ads From Westminster
Dog Show
Chicago-Based Credit-History Company and Alzheimer's Support Group Are
Helping to Promote Dangerous and Unhealthy Breeding Standards, Says Group

Chicago -- PETA has sent letters to a credit-history consultant and a
charity that supports people stricken with dementia--both based in
Chicago--urging them to pull the plug on advertising their companies on the
Web site for the American Kennel Club's (AKC) Westminster Kennel Club Dog
Show. In its letters to TransUnion (the parent company of online credit
report provider FreeScore) and Memory Bridge, PETA points out that the AKC
promotes dangerous and unhealthy breeding standards that result in one out
of four dogs being born with physical problems ranging from allergies to
epilepsy.
Debilitating health problems plague purebreds. Depending on the breed,
these include hypothyroidism, demodectic mange, cataracts, ear infections,
allergies, and many more. Because of breeding, Labrador
retrievers--America's most popular dog--are prone to bone disease,
hemophilia, and retinal degeneration, and nearly 60 percent of golden
retrievers suffer from hip dysplasia. Also, procedures such as ear-cropping
and tail-docking--which are outlawed in other countries--are common in the
U.S. because of breeding standards.
Despite these problems, the AKC encourages people to buy purebred
animals, even though almost half of the nearly 8 million dogs and cats--many
of them purebreds--who are taken in by U.S. animal shelters every year must
be killed because of a shortage of homes.
PETA has asked USA Network to stop broadcasting the Westminster show
in light of the BBC's recent announcement that it will no longer televise
the Crufts show--Westminster's counterpart in the U.K.--because of harmful
breed-standard policies. PETA has also asked Pedigree to pull its
sponsorship of the Westminster show after Pedigree U.K. broke its ties with
the Crufts dog show last year.
"Because of the AKC's inhumane policies, countless dogs endure painful
cosmetic surgeries and millions of wonderful dogs die in animal shelters,"
says PETA Vice President Daphna Nachminovitch. "TransUnion and Memory Bridge
can help take a bite out of the cruel treatment of dogs simply by ending
their sponsorship of the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show."
PETA's letters to TransUnion and Memory Bridge are available upon
request. For more information, please visit PETA.org.

PETA is lobbying the USA Network to drop its coverage of Westminster, citing
the BBC's decision to drop its coverage of Crufts. It is imperative that
all of us take a minute to contact USA Network and let them know how much we
appreciate their coverage of Westminster and the pleasure it gives those who
own dogs.
The contact information can be found at this link:
http://www.usanetwork.com/feedback/
If you scroll down the page, there are tables where you can choose the
programming you want to leave feedback on, and Westminster is one of the
choices.
Take a minute to help support the sport of dogs, and more importantly this
frontal assault by these radical groups to eliminate the ownership of all
pets.
Please pass this on to all your pet owning friends- the time has arrived
when we can no longer let 'others' ensure that pet ownership will be an
option or available for future generations!
Thanks!

Re: Peta vs Westminster
Just one more thing animal rights groups are trying to take away from allthe paople who are responsilbe with there animals.
But yet the PETA people can go into labs and release all the animals into the wild with diseases and such resulting in the spread of diseases and the death of the animals and its ok. and they can go to the local county fairs and turn all the fair animals loose causing injury or death to some kids project animal and thats okay. Guess they must think they are better off dead.
Not to change the subject but this lies along the lines of how crazy some of these animal rights people can get. There was an article in the sports illustrated dec issue about how all of the pitbulls in the michael vick case were put in foster care and rehabilitated and placed into homes...so what happens when one of those dogs attacks and kills someone or something? I am not saying it shouldn't have been done one way or the other but I think they could have used all those resources to help the more easiely adotpable dogs and instead of saving those few mentally abused fighting dogs they could have saved many other easier adoptable dogs.
It would be nice to know the mind set of some of those peta people sometimes???

And HSUS president Wayne Pacelle told the Times that his group recommended that government officials “put down” (that is, kill) the dogs rather than adopt them out to suitable homes. HSUS later quietly altered its Internet fundraising pitch.

Re: Peta vs Westminster
I have the SI issue I just cant seem to find it but in the article it says that Vick donnated the money to have the dogs saved, like that it suppose to make him any better of a person. and out of all the dogs seized only three were not put up for adoption, two died while in the shelter and one had to be out down because it was too aggressive.

Peta had nothing to do with placing any of these animals. We need to keep our stories straight if we are going to win these fights.

It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!
Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

Re: Peta vs Westminster
I never said peta did I said the animal rights people!! This was one instance where peta thought the dogs should be put down.
Re: Peta vs Westminster
Yeah, to keep it off topic , I had just googled the Michael Vick incident--and oddly enough CNN says both HSUS and PETA recommended putting the dogs down. I wonder how PETA justifies that stance with all the wacky things they've done in the name of animal rights.

If I remember, I'll probably be watching the dog show. I had also googled PETA vs Westminster, and there were at least two articles by the LA Times. The 2nd article (below) was about the publics response. You can vote or view the votes too. It appears that to this date, some 20,000+ folks have voted with 97% saying dog shows are cool and Westminster should air and 3% saying dogs shows are unethical and it shouldn't air. Give 'em your vote.
