Chief
I'm in a state of shock, I cannot believe the news I just got!! I just got a call telling me that my sweet boy Chief passed away tonight. My heart is breaking.
He was one heck of a bird dog, trial dog and a great companion with one of the sweetest dispositions you ever saw.
This was such a freak thing, I cannot believe it??? Almost 2 weeks ago, Joe said he got into garbage he left out & got sick a few days later (bloody diarhhea, vomiting) x-rays confirmed an object in his intestines. It was moving, vet opted to leave it be. He passed it, had cut/irritated his intestines some but vets weren't concerned at the time.(large piece of hard plastic) He was fine until a week ago, perfectly healthy. He started getting sick, off his feed some, lethargic, nothing more. Vet check showed slightly elevated temp -not much else, they figured just a bug (not thinking of his garbage thing 2 weeks prior) but within 2 days he went down hill badly. White cell count went over 7,600. Tests sent off to OH State showed massive bacterial infection, it was through his whole intestinal system, he was septic. He was on antibiotics (baytril) while waiting for a culture confirmation to know what specifically to treat with.....all to late though.
It took one week, went into his kidneys, heart and intestines. I have to wonder if surgery to remove the plastic would have prevented this????
(Helen, if you read this...it's the dog of Joes I ran braced with Brian last year in OLGD)
Chief........you were one of the good ones, I will never forget you!!!!! May the pheasants be numerous and the grouse hold tight......until we hunt again........

Re: Chief
Really sorry to hear about your Chief. That's a terrible way to go, especially if it could have been prevented. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Ann so sorry to hear about Chief. I know how badly it hurts. Also sorry I'm just reading this and sending my condolences. I don't get on here much and have been really busy but I'm out sick today so checking in on things.

Re: Chief
I just saw this also so sorry for the delay in post.
This is just terrible. I always liked Chief. He was one of the good ones. May the fields be filled with birds my friend.

Oh Ann...my heart is just breaking for you~~
I'm so so sorry for your loss. The days are dark now and the grief is overwhelming, I know the feeling all too well. Lost my Omen to the same thing....only she DID have the surgery! So no...don't second guess things. I'll whisper a plea to Omen for her to show Chief all of the best hunting fields up there....ok?
My heart and prayers are with you and may all of the memories made these past years with Chief be your comfort.
