Lost a Great friend today.

Post by kensfishing » Fri Nov 07, 2008 10:26 pm

Got a call from Dave Scott this afternoon. His dog Chief was shot and killed today while guiding. What a lost. I've known this dog for many years, and shot alot of birds over him. Dave is just devistated, as was I. There are no words to say I'm so sorry, and I'm going to miss him also. I've got one of his sons and daughter. Of course Mike is just like Chief. I'm sorry Dave. We'll all miss him.

David -
I'm very sorry to hear about your tragic loss. While I unfortunately never had the chance to hunt behind him, I have heard countless stories.I have two granddaughters from him and be rest assured that he will not only be remembered for his unparalelled ability but also by the many generations that will carry his name yet to come.

Thank you everyone for the kind words. I loved that dog more than anything else in the entire world. I’m just totally devastated. I swear I told that dog I loved him ten times a day. People would sometimes laugh about it, but I didn’t care. To those of you who have a special dog, please go out and give them a hug and tell them just how special they are for me.

Chief was a heck of a birddog. I knew many years ago that I would never have another dog like him, but went through over 40 dogs trying to find another one to no avail. I was killing wild birds over him at 4 months old. No telling how many birds he pointed in his life, and he was a great duck and goose dog. He did nothing wrong yesterday. He brought his A-game, and stayed totally broke on every bird. I was so proud of him. Every time he pointed a bird, I would swell up with pride for my old dog.

Over the course of the day, he pointed and retrieved every single bird killed, except for the one that killed him. There were two dogs on point, and the bird from the other dog flushed right at Chief about two feet off the ground. I started yelling, “don’t shoot, don’t shoot” and then the shot went off. Chief got broad sided at about fifteen yards. He yelped, and ran straight to me. As soon as he got to me, he died in my arms. The whole thing probably lasted 30 seconds. I put him in the front seat of my truck with his head on my thigh, and drove him a couple hours to my parents’ home in Oklahoma. We built him a box, and buried him with some of his favorite things. I keep finding myself yelling “don’t shoot, don’t shoot” and I can’t get it out of my head and it’s driving me crazy.

Chief was more than a birddog to me. He was my best friend, and many times, it felt like he was my only friend. I got him as a pup back in 1997 from Don and Pam Paltani. I immediately made him my house dog, and over the course of his life, he only spent four or five days in a kennel. Being a single guy, he was my family. Thank you Lord for allowing me the privilege of having Chief in my life. I didn’t own him; he owned me. Chief you were my pride and joy. I loved you, and all ready miss you more than words can describe. One day I’ll meet you on the other side.

Dave,

What a tough loss.....I'm so VERY sorry for ya. Coming from Don Paltani, I'm sure your pup was an incredible bird dog but I know exactly what you mean when about him being so much more. I lost my GSP, Sadie, this year after almost 15 years of constant companionship. She absolutely HAD to be by my side (even slept on the shower mat every morning when I took my shower). Our bond went light-years beyond hunting and I miss her more than words can say (crying as I'm typing this). Hang in there man, get a pup, and work with that pup in memory of Chief......that's the way he'd want it.

Regards,
Jeff

David

We are extremely saddened for you great loss. I own Clown's Gypsy Belle who is a littermate sister to Chief. She is a very special dog also and I know how you must feel. Belle is my first shorthair that my husband bought me from Don and Pam Paltani when I wanted to get into field trials with him. She is getting old now and I would love to have another young dog just like her. These dogs can never be replaced. May your memories help you through this tough time.

SO so sorry. So unexpected and so hard. Truly a a friend lost and I am so very sorry. I do believe that he is waiting for you on the other side. When my beloved Aby passed away, my dad said that their will be a pack of dog kisses and muddy pawprints waiting for me, and it helps me to envision it. Makes me smile to imagine all the happy tails and muddy feet. My thoughts are with you.

Dave,

Man.. Words cannot possibly express the love a man has for a dog like that, nor can I come up with the words to say how deeply sorry we all are for your loss. Simply tragic. I lost a great dog once and it still moves me to tears to this day. As I seen this post I said to my wife "ah man I hate seeing these" It just tugs at your heart and makes it ache. Many of us don't know one another, and I don't know you from adam, but we are joined by the common bond of dogs. Blessed you are for your time with a great dog like Chief, and blessed was Chief for a master who loved him as much as you do.
It is with my deepest sympathies that I say "God has another great dog in heaven."

This verse has always brought me a little comfort in my loss.
So you have sorrow now, but I will see you again; Then you will rejoice, and no one can rob you of that joy.

I've had the pleasure of meeting Dave nine years ago under some very strange circumstances, Dave and I can laugh about it now. The first time I saw Chief he climbed into my lap. Dave said he had never done that to anyone but his Mom. Dave and Chief are family to me. It hurt me almost as much as Dave. I've had the pleasure of owning a couple of his pups over the years and of course Mike. He's too much like his father. If anything ever happened to me Mike goes to Dave. We've been friends along time. I'll miss him, and everytime I look at Mike I think of Chief. His memory lives on.

I'm so sorry to hear about your loss, i've lost two dogs in the last five years and I know what your going through, the pain has not eased with time. I know we don't know each other but I have heard many good things about Chief. Another lesson to all of us about gun safety with our pups. Its sad that Dave had to lose his companion because of someone else's stupidity.

Dave I'm so sorry to hear about Chief I know he was very very special to you. As I read this post I myself was and am in tears as I just found out that our favorite female BDK's Fire N The Hole "Holly" was put down today due to having a large cancerous tumor and then was having difficulty today breathing. Our ranch owner Perry has had Holly @ this place south of KC for the last few years and hunted her religously. Matter fact he and Holly had hunted the heck out of up north the month of October, he said was just in the beginning of November he started noticing something wasn't right.

Holly is out of NC/NSDC/NASDC/FC/Regional/Species Champion Blue Max Spitfire V Grief x Carson's Dollie of Windsor (Dollie was out of Spitfires littermate FC Bluemax Salley Von Hoffman x NC/NSDC/FC BMK's Strike The Gold). Holly has sired FC/Regional/Species CH MRT's Bingo Buck, NSDC/FC BDK's War Emblem, FC BDK's Tobadforu, FC Flashy Ricky Ticky Rocknfire and probably others I'm forgetting.

Holly will be greatly missed here @ BDK & @ Perry & Nancy's in KC and especially when going hunting this winter. Holly was just 1 month and 1 day over just turning 12 yrs. old.

Sorry again Dave.!!!

My heart is crying with yours. My deepest sympathies in the tragic and senseless loss of your beloved friend, hunting partner, and heart dog. There are no words at this time that will ease your pain. Only know that we (your GDF family) grieve with you during this dark time of great loss.
May all of the wonderful memories made over the years eventually be your comfort and to help to fade the pain, guilt and agony of those last terrible moments you are reliving now.
Blessed be. May some measure of peace find your heart soon.

Dave,

A great dog goes down doing what he absolutely loved. I have known Dave for several years and was lucky enough to hunt over Chief. HE was one of the great ones for sure.

He will be watching over you on every bird you take. His memory will live within you and those of us who were lucky enough to shoot a bird for him!. I am truly sorry for you.

Please give me the honor of making a headstone for him. Send me some high quality digital pictures when you can.

Your friend,

Dave, Sorry to hear about your Chief. What a shame to be taken from you way to early. Unless you have been there it is hard for people to understand the love & devotion we have with our dogs. My dogs can't speak, but we have a special understanding. Yeah we talk to our dogs...and they do answer us in their own way. When you are having your worst days, it's as though they know, understand, and seem genuinely concerned to somehow make us smile, and they always do. They are amazing creatures, and I am sorry you have lost yours.

I had to read this 2 times to believe what I had just read. This is the most unbelievable thing I have ever heard. You are a much better man than I as that man wouldn't be able to shoot a gun for the rest of his life after I finished with him. What he did was terrible (I couldn't even comment on the original post as I have not lost a gundog just now own my first, hated losing our house pet dog that I grew up with. Glad I had moved out when it had happened), but to even think in any way shape or form it was ok to send that package is incomprehensible to me. I had considered guiding some in the future as we don't have wild birds here and saw it as an opportunity to see my dog work more and more frequently, but this thread has made me seriously reconsider especially considering his actions after the incident. Our thoughts are with you as you continue to try to overcome this tragedy.

Dave - I was talking to Ken yesterday and he told me about the package. That is one of the most ridiculous things I have ever heard and I don't even know what to say. I'm sorry I couldn't make it down this weekend but I have been under the weather for a couple of weeks. Good luck this weekend and enjoy Ace, I heard he has been doing great! I'll talk to you soon.

Sorry for your loss, and the excess grief that has been caused. My old house dog passed last summer and I still think about him all the time. I had been moved out of the folks house for nearly five years but whenever I would come home to visit old Beau would check my bed for a few weeks to see if I was there after I had left. He used to sleep with me when I lived at home. Its hard to take, losing your buddy. They are definitely running hard in heaven.

If there aren't any dogs in heaven, I don't wanna go to heaven. I wanna go where the dogs go.

This is unbelievable. I am sorry for your loss.

This guy should never hunt over dogs again.

Since all you've posted are facts, why not put his name out there so nobody else will ever let him hunt over their dogs?

I know I'd appreciate it.
