Flax Oil

Post by ckirsch » Fri May 31, 2019 1:45 pm

It's not all that often that I run across a product that actually delivers on it's promises, so I thought this was worth sharing.

I have two pointers. One has a beautiful seal-like coat, the other a much harsher and dryer coat that he constantly sheds, to the point that I can't have him in the cab of the truck or in the house. I saw an ad in PDJ about a flax oil supplement, and coat improvement was listed among it's purported benefits. I thought it was worth $15 to give it a try, and after a few weeks there is a very noticeable improvement in my dog's coat - much smoother and softer to touch, and more shine to it. Still sheds more than I'd like but it appears to be less than what it has been in the past. The other benefits advertised were reduction in joint inflammation, and suppression of some autoimmune and bowel disorders. I can't vouch for any of those, but am convinced that it made an appreciable improvement in the dog's coat, to the point that I just reordered a gallon of it. I'd previously tried fish oil tablets along with a variety of foods to no avail.

Curious if anyone else has any experience with flax oil.

Good info thanks for sharing. What is the brand and where did you find it? I would like to give it a try.

I found the ad in the back of Pointing Dog Journal. Sammy's Shiny Coat from Stengel Oils in Milbank, SD 605-432-4900. I tried the 16 oz bottle, which lasts for a couple of weeks. Reordered the gallon size as I'm convinced now it's worth using. I feed Diamond and just put a tablespoon or so on the kibble each day.

I'd be interested to learn your perspective on it after you use it for a few weeks.

Flax seed has a lot of nutritional values. Not sure if the same is true for the oil. Had not hear of flax oil before. Thanks for the heads up.

Here's an article on Flax Seed vs. Flax Oil. https://www.livestrong.com/article/1042 ... -vs.-flax/

It appears there are about 240 calories in 2 Tbls. of Flax Oil so I'd be careful if your dog has a weight problem.

We have been putting salmon oil on our dogs food for years. They seem to do well on it.
