Leather shoes/boots

Post by djswizz » Mon Dec 11, 2006 2:03 pm

I've been wearing these for about 6 years now:

Dr. Martens are great quality but I recently found out they now make them in China! No way I'm buying them now. Was wondering what other brands out there are comparable to the Dr. Marten? I need made to last shoes... Thanks!

Redwings, although some of them are made in China now as well. Lacrosse boots, Hytest boots, Justin boots, some of them are made in mexico. Chippewa, expensive but nice.

Not being a smart-alic, but good luck finding anything like that made in America.

Now, that being said - I have Wolverine Boots that I like. I have Timberland Pro boots that I like. I have Rocky boots that I like. I have a decent pair of Herman Survivors (yes, Walmart Boots). I even have an old pair of my dad's jump boots that I like to tool around in every once in a while.

Shoes, I have Timberlands, BASS and Johnston and Murphy and Cole and Haan.
We have done something with nothing for so long we are now qualified to do everything with anything....

Danners are good, but Filson boots are the best I have found. You're gonna pay more, but they last longer, wear better, and are more comfortable than any others I've had.

The Bean Boots from LLBean are the best upland boot I have ever had. . . .and I think the original Bean Boot is still made right here in the USA!

My son and I both have Rocky's and can only get maybe 2 seasons or so before they start to leak (even in wet grass).

Who's got a reasonably light weight upland boot that keeps the water out?

I figger if they're only gonna last a coupla years I might as well but the cheap Cabela's boots as spend more for a name brand.

Wow, $355 for a pair of boots! And I remember the days when my parents refused to buy me a $100 pair of basketball shoes.

$355 dollars is more than I have spent on boots in my whole life. Trying to think back and I think I can come up with about 4 or 5 pairs at maybe 70 to 100 a pair. Never had a bit of trouble with any of them. The older leather ones were kept oiled but the newer canvas ones get pretty much ignored.

IMO Russells mocassins are far and away the best and you can get many different stylesoptions. I am an Electrician and have boots on my feet most of my life and can wear out a pair of boots in 5 mos I have had my Russells for 4yrs now, although I have only had them on at work 2 dozen times I bought them for field however they are far more comfortable than any boot you will buy off the shelve's as you send them a template of your foot and measurements LOVE EM

Been awhile since I checked in here. Yes, folks, $355 is high. However, until you have owned a pair, don't think you have something better. Filson quality is second to none. Boots, chaps, and other hunting clothes/supplies are the best I have found. If you're paying $150-$200 for Danners/Rockies, you should really try the Filson. Their customer service is outstanding (as it should be) and the product even better.

I always wait till they discontinue a model or have some little mark on them and buy my shoes for 60 or 70 dollars. Just wore out the soles on a pair of Rockies that cost me 70 about 16 years ago and just bought a pair of Brownings for 65with 400 grams of Thinsulate and a pair of Rockys with 1000 gms for 75two years ago. These will probably last longer than I do.

I bought some on sale this fall/early winter. Have Thinsulate 1600 the sales person did not think I would be happy with them. Thought they might be too hot. I have always maded sure I have the new style socks that absorb in them and have not had trouble yet. How have you done with yours that have 1000 in them? Or do you get into some pretty cold when you wear those?

I think anything over 600 or so are designed for people who are sitting either in a stand or on the ice. They are too hot for walking unless you maybe would get into some extreme cold. That is why I bought the 400 this year for pheasant hunting and they replace the 600 gm one that the soles have started to crack on. Love the 1000 for deer hunting.

LL Bean customer service!!

Post by omega58 » Mon Mar 12, 2007 9:42 am

All I can say is what great customer service they have!! My boot stitching came a little undone and it still wasnt' leaking, but I didn't want it to start, so I called them thinking they would restitch it for me. . .nope, they sent me a brand new pair of boots for FREE!! I just have to send the others back.

I know they have the lifetime guarantee, but I have had lifetime guarantees from other companies before only for them to tell me it was my fault and it wasn't covered.

I AM NOW A LL BEAN BOOT WEARER FOR LIFE!!!

Russell moccasins are custom made in the U.S. I have about 5 pairs of them now and can't imagine wearing anything else. I wear one pair to work daily.
