So not to sound like a total newbie, but what exactly does a walking field trial consist of? My wife and I are interested in coming just to see how it works. Also are you aloud to bring your dog if it is not in the competition? Please let me know so we can make plans to hopefully attend.

Many Thanks,

Jake

Jake, a field trial is a basically set up into various levels or stakes: puppy, derby, gun dog. Your dog is competing against all the others in its class for placement (4th through to 1st). There is also Amateur & Open stakes (amateur & pro level, although you don't have to be a pro to participate in open).

Puppy- 6-15 months. The little ones are out there just showing that they've got some prey drive, can find & point a bird (doesn't have to be held very long). No big thing if the puppy chases birds.
Derby - 6mo -2 yrs. They need to be steadier, respond to commands, hold a point longer. Dogs can still chase birds, but it's not encouraged.
Gun Dog - over 2 yrs. They should be steady to wing & shot. Some stakes are retrieving. They may also be required to back or honour, if the situation presents itself.

A walking field trial refers to the fact that all handling is done on foot.

You very welcome to come shmooze at the event. We'd love to see you there! :)

My email, etc., is on the Premium. Feel free to contact me directly.
