Hello all,

I have zero experience in any sort of dog competition and was wondering if anyone here could steer me in the right direction. I live in northern NY and am curious if there are any organizations close to me that hold events. I have a nice setter that I spend a lot of time hunting grouse and woodcock with and curious if there is any type of open event I could let him run in. He's not a coverdog he is dual type....would this matter?

Thanks in advance for any info.

Go to AKC events. Search for field trials and hunt tests in your area.

Do a search on the AKC website and look for the rules in the events you want to enter. Do some research and send the field trial or hunt test secretary an email if you have questions about how to enter. They are usually very helpful. Also let the judges know its the first time you entered a dog in an event prior to starting your brace. They might have more patience lol. Have fun and ask a lot of questions.

Go to the American Field webpage and they have a list of events by date on their site. Not many fun type events in AKC unless your dog is dead brok to wing and shot. Very few setter clubs. Ky, TN and Indiana and Ohio have lots of A F walking trials

Hey 'dualsetter'. Just wanted to comment on that beautiful dog in your picture. What a beauty!

I know the Hudson valley Brittany Club holds a trial in the fall that has a 'hunting dog' stake. Judging stops at the flush. The trail is open to all pointing breeds. I believe they have hosted their trial already (usually beginning of september). They also hold all regular stakes with many walking stakes as well (if you don't have a horse). The grounds are beautiful too. Just a thought. YOu'll find it on the AKC site. I believe it is held at the Lost Pond area. Just a thought. There is also Baldwinsville, NY. I've been to the Brittany Club of Upper New York trial, also open to all breeds. They have horseback and walking stakes. NIce grounds as well. Those are a couple of options for you...
