So will that run into tommorow? How many dogs were drawn for the Shooting Dog? Will the shooting dog start right after the AA or will it wait until the next day?

The AA will run today and according to Dennis Brath it will be done today. The shooting dog will be drawn tonight and will begin on Wednesday. He did not say how many entries there were for the shooting dog.

It is drawn the night before they run? Interesting.

With the exception of the Nationals, AF/NGSPA stakes are always drawn in public, in the clubhouse, the night before the stake is run. Entries are taken any time up to the time of the drawing. It is in the AF rules.

There are some nice dogs in the AA, I really like brace 2 as those two dogs get after it. That would be one I def would want to watch. Keep up with the updates on who the tops performers of the day are.

Is that AF shorthair trials? Because im quite sure its not a rule with the pointer boys. The reason I asked is, it makes it quite hard for owners to be able to attend the trial when they don't know when their dog is running. And an FYI, its really hard for a judge to know when he's judging the derby stake.

Well, it depends on how its advertised, I can't speak for all the pointer clubs that is true. But when I ran pointers, it was night before. The AF Minimum Requirements say that the minimum is night before, so it is up to the clubs to advertise if entries are going to close earlier. Here are the pertinent rules, from the AF Minimum Requirements (http://www.americanfield.com):
4. A stake must be drawn no later than the night before the day the stake is advertised to be run.

5. Dogs shall not be substituted after the draw.
In stakes that take several days to run, your are right it makes it difficult for an owner to know when the dog will run.

I understand it states no later than the night before. But it doesn't say it can't be done 3 days prior like all major championships are done.

Yes, that is my point. For example, the NGSPA Nationals are advertised with an entry closing date. The Minimum Requirements don't prohibit that, nor do they prohibit holding the drawing at an advertised date before the event. That is the choice of the club. They also don't prohibit holding the drawing the night before and closing the entries just before the drawing, which is the way the NGSPA does it and was the tradition throughout the AF for many years.

There are pros and cons to each method. With the early drawing, clubs always have to deal with pros who send in entries for a whole string of dogs, they get drawn, and then the pro decides not to come after all. Usually, the entries were not accompanied with a check, so the club has drawn a whole bunch of dogs that are now scratched and not paid for. With the drawing the night before the event, the pros and dogs that are going to be in the event are all there. I agree that it can inconvenience the owners (being one myself). But it seems to work out.

I second that. I visited the Kings a couple weeks ago and followed Bets on a training run. Good lord can that dog roll!

Thanks to Kelly Custer and her facebook update, we have some news.
Results of the Amateur Shooting Dog at the NGSPA Chicken Championship. This was a dual sanctioned trial so for AKC / American Field Winner - Deke, H/O by Hayley Killam. Deke had 9 wild chicken finds. Runner up was Angelina, H/O by Haytley Killam. Angie had 3 finds AKC - 3rd place was Rip, H/O by Mark Wasserman and fourth was I believe Blue - H/O by Hayley Killam. Congradulations to Mark and the Killams.
Congratulations to the fine dogs and handlers!

WOW!

I would assume it was sharptail and not really prairie chicken, as these days I rarely see 9 chickens in a day.

To have nine finds of any kind in a trial is something, on wild birds it is IT.

CONGRATULATIONS!

IMO these Wild Species Championships are what seperates the truly great dogs from those that are handled and trained on liberated birds in order to compete in the field trial "arena" !

Without a doubt there has been some very hard work and diligent training behind those dogs who are digging up multiple finds much less 9 wild bird finds in these hour stakes. Congrat's Deke, the Kilams and pro Pat Waresk, along with all the others who are willing to compete in these great stakes!

Will be up there to ride some of the OSD stakes this week and look forward to seeing everyone.

Good luck!

They have a very good population of prairie chickens on the ranch where the trial is run, so it was most likely prairie chickens.

Friends from Houston went and ran their dogs in the amateur, said there were chickens everywhere. I think the sharptails are further north.

I dropped by Hayley's the end of last week at the ranch, and watched Hayley run some young dog on a little area that the CH. would not be run on. We found both Prairie Chickens in the flats, and Sharptail in the sand hills. Had one covey of over a dozen chickens that we found in the flats. Lots of Sharptail in the hills. Not a bad place to show what a dog can do. The birds were still holding pretty tight. Dogs could get 3-6 ft and the birds would hold. These were the 1-2 yr old puppies and derbies that were not on the 1st string yet.

Anyone have running order for OSD? I know with as many braces, all are kept busy.

How are the 12 one hour courses working out? Sounds like a great accomplishment to be able to have and get additional land to use that much country. Less pressure on birds and should make a more even playing field from beginning of trial to when the last dogs run.
