Big Doings

Post by Wagonmaster » Mon Jan 14, 2008 4:19 pm

For those who are interested, the NGSPA Circuit has started its new year with the Savannah River Championships, already reported in this Forum. Next up will be the Region 12 in Arizona, and the Quail Championship at Ardmore. The Region 16 in Waynesboro, Georgia takes place normally in the middle of February.

Two of the biggest events in the field trial world occur in February. The National Championship at the Ames Plantation near Grand Junction, TN will start on February 11. If I am lucky, I will get to ride that event this year and go to the Bird Dog Museum. A friend has a horse for me.

The other big event will be the NGSPA National Championships, which start on February 28 this year, at the Blue Mountain WMA near Booneville, AR. I plan on being there for the first week, which should include the Amateur Shooting Dog Championship and the National Championship.

We are off and running for another year. Best of luck to all the great competitors who put their dogs up for all to see.

Don Kidd gave me a tour of the grounds near Boonville, Arkansas a few months ago. They are impressive!!!!! Beautiful country and a great place to run dogs. I would love to go, but have too many things going on this year.

Wagonmaster, Let me know if you do come down for the NC at the Ames Plantation. I will try to go a couple of days, but not sure which days yet. Thanks for keeping us informed on the dates of the Field Trials.

Brett, my plan is to go to Grand Junction for the first ever induction ceremonies into the NGSPA Hall of Fame. I helped a little with that, and would like to go. That is on Thurday the 8th or Friday the 9th, not sure which. Then I would stay the weekend, go to the museum, see if David Smith will let me take some photos of GSP exhibit there. Then ride the NC on opening day Monday and maybe Tuesday if my friend is there with a horse for me.

The whole schedule of GSP Championships is at http://www.birddogposse.org/Content.asp ... 20Schedule

PS to Mark W. The order of the stakes at Booneville has always been National Championship, Futurity, NASDC, OSDC. The Nationals have always started on a Monday, though, and this year for some reason they start on a Thursday, so we are all waiting to see what Don K. has in mind.

field trial

John, one of my really good friends is Jacob Smith. His dad is David Smith who helps run the Bird Dog Museum. Let me know if I can help in anyway. David is a really nice man. He let me walk through and take as many pictures as I wanted. One word of advice on taking pictures. Well two things. The flash will glare of the glass(I'm an amatuer when it comes to taking pictures) and take a pen and paper and write down in exact order which you take the pictures. I recognized most of the dogs I took pictures of, but some I couldnt' remember who they were. I know I will list them next time I go.
I run in a NSTRA field trial up at Pyramid State Park in Pinckneyville, IL Feb. 9th and 10th. But, I may take Feb. 11th off to go up to Ames and ride that day. I only get to go one or two days to Ames for the NC, so I kind of have to pick and choose when I get to go. I'll let you know if I decide to go Feb. 11th. Maybe, we could meet up and ride, watch bird dogs that day.
I hope you get a chance to come down. You will love the Bird Dog Museum. It's heaven for a bird dog man or woman. All the history in there is great. I'm glad to see there will be some German Shorthairs in there soon.
There's a whole new addition on the back of the Museum that's dedicated to retrievers. A ton of Lab pictures in there. I'm not a Lab guy, so I didn't know one dog in there. But, I'm sure that would be interesting to a Lab Field Trial person.
Anyway, I'll try to touch base with you closer to the first part of Feb.

I was lucky last year, and got to talk to David several times. First I got a packet of tickets in the mail for the shotgun drawing for the banquet to support the BDM. So I sent in my hundred bucks. A couple of months passed and I got a call from a very southern sounding voice saying I had won one of the shotguns. Eventually talked to David about shipping and stuff.

Overlapping this, I went to the NGSPA Nationals where my dog won the NC, and as a result, the Bird Dog Museum wanted a photo of him to hang in the new GSP exhibit. So they have one now, it is on the wall. I talked to David some more because we had a heck of a time shipping it down there, both shipments were damaged. But David got everything worked out for me, and was very pleasant, so I would like to meet him in person. Part of the reason for making the journey. I got a photo from NGSPA President Don Kidd, of the exhibit, but would just like to say I have seen it myself. And I have a better camera than Don does. :D

He put a little piece in the Museum's newsletter about all of this.

You are right about the order. Will be there for the all age to run Jax and Cutter and probably stay for the Am to run Kate.
