Well the entry forms or premium list will soon be arriving for the BIG trial. The running order looks to be the same;
amateur on the 15th,
then futurity,
allage
open gun dog.
If you are going, post up and tell what you are going to run.

Looks like Robbi covered us, they will be running FC Slick Kessie Joe (Kessie) and FC MRT'S Bingo Buck (Buck) for us in the AA. Don't have any futurity dogs this year, and doesn't look like we have a gun dog right now, so will probably skip the am.

Before each dog is run they sell a calcutta which people bid on and buy at auction for the 4 placements. The pot is broken into 40%, 30, 20, 10 and can make some hugh sums of money for the amateurs. It is lots of fun. I think the $600.00 fee strikes me as the top. The keep a couple of days ahead of the running with the calcutta.
A friend of mine got 2nd a couple of years ago and had bouth the dog in the calcutta and it paid him about $1900.
The GSPCA club cuts the pot in some manner to help pay bills.
During the amateur, most every night is a free dinner at the house and a good time.

I am running Bella in the Futurity. We plan to head down on the 14th and should be there until the 23rd.
Does anyone remember what day the Futurity ended last year?
I really need to update the pictures of my dogs.

Hey Jerry, I am trying to work out my personal schedule to be there for the AA. As I recall, the AGD usually runs through Friday. Then the Futurity is Sat. and Sun., and it being another big Fut., it could run a little into Mon. So the AA starts Mon. or Tue., never know for sure. Is that about the way things are expected to go?

Rare is the time that the amateur is finished before noon saturday, that is kinda how it has been. Ther aa last year started on Tuesday, I think as we had such a large entry in the futurity. It will just be the number of entries.
Did everyone read there is a discussion of having 2 futuries, an allage and a gun dog, they would be held at different times. Will be discussed this year there.

Geez, I'd sure vote "no" on that. With several "Nat'ls" in different organizations, different grounds, etc. the Nat'ls are already diluted to the point that folks question their significance. Adding more stakes only adds to that as well as the "everyone gets a ribbon" impression some folks have of trials anyway.Did everyone read there is a discussion of having 2 futuries, an allage and a gun dog, they would be held at different times. Will be discussed this year there.
One Nat'l Futurity and one Nat'l Ch. judged to good 'ol bird dog criteria is plenty IMO!

I think the idea of separating he futurities into GD and AA has some real merit.
There's nothing harder to judge properly than puppy and derby stakes because of the fact that you are supposed to judge both AA and GD prospects without giving favor to one over the other.
In reality it works out that the AA prospect seems to get the nod most of the time and the logic is sensible. When you finish getting a dog fully broke you usually shorten the range up quite a bit through the process so if you knock a AA's range down a good bit you still have a good gun dog, but if you knock a good gundog prospect's range down by half do you even have a good gun dog left?
I don't necessarily agree with that philosophy but I do understand it and it inevitibly leads to an overall preference for AA prospects over GD prospects.
In weekend trials trying to separate the two would be impractical because we usually in most clubs have an extremely tight running schedule anyhow with no room for any more stakes.
At the national level though to showcase the best of both Gun Dog Prospects and AA prospects in different stakes definitely has some appeal.
If it were to add a couple of days to the total running time of the trial is that such a big deal when the trial will be running for two weeks anyhow?
I think it's definitely worth consideration. CR

I agree with WildRose on this. I know a number of breeders that are producing FT gun dogs that do not enter the futurity because it caters to the AA prospect.

Regarding splitting the futurity, it didn't work the first time we tried it, why do we think it will work again? Folks forget that we tried this once; and entries for both stakes dropped off.
We don't have AA and GD puppy and derby stakes, why should we have an AA and GD futurity?
More importantly, the idea of splitting the amateur championship off and putting it on a rotation is alive again; that's an even worse idea that needs to be killed off as quickly as possible. A rotating national of any kind just turns the trial into a regional stake, and impacts the consistent level of competition we have today. Funny thing is we tried that one before as well, and decided that a fixed location would work better.
We seem to be in an era where certain factions in the club want to "tinker" with things; often things that were tried before and didn't work. We have folks who have decided that it's time that their "theories" become practice. Hold on to your seat folks, it will be an interesting few years.
JMO,
Dave

I believe in the addage .. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". This is the 19th year staight in Eureka and it only keeps getting bigger and better each year. Great gounds, put on bt Great people and attrcting the greatest dogs... what could be better. Its central location is ideal. Our "leaders" need to leave it alone and not try and put their "stamp" on it before they leave office.
Same goes for splitting up the futurity. If they are worried that AA pups get preferred treatment over GD pups... maybe have one judge who has more expience with AA and the other one with more GD... just a thought...
But bottom line is they are all young dogs and who is to say if you split them will you have AA trying to run GD to look stronger... I foresee nothing but problems...

With the way the judges are rotated it is not possible and we me as the stake manager to cater to the allage dogs and handlers.
A couple of years ago a judge announced at the beginning of the stake that he was looking for a polished allage performance and this shook up everyone. He did not get it and an allage potential dog has not won the futurity for a spell.
Moon would probably be the exception, maybe. It is mostly gun dogs or shooting dogs that get the placements.
Made a new course last year to help the dogs and the handlers and it did just that. Work every year to try and make the stake better and better.
I know from where the discussion is coming from and I agree with Doug, it would be a tradegy to split it.

You know i've never run in the futurity and haven't paid that much attention to it so I can't suggest "fixing what ain't broke". From a relative newcomer to the sport though the idea certainly has appeal, so it's good to get the guys who have been around a lot longer to put their two cents in.
Lots of things sound good when you first look at them, particularly if you have littler or no experience.
Getting the whole topic out for discussion however I think is a really good thing. Much better to hash things out where you can really sit back and think about it on a forum like this than to wait till it's time for a vote and have a lot of uneducated opinions making a quick decision. CR
