Nat'l Amateur Chukar Championships - All Age

Post by DGFavor » Mon Mar 17, 2008 12:23 pm

Thought some folks might be like to see a "few" trial pics from out west. I went and enjoyed the Nat'l Amateur Chukar All Age Championship near Sunnyside, WA this weekend - unfortunately they still had a couple braces to run today and I had to get on back home so I don't have any winners to report. I was proud of the effort Sharptailhunter's dog Smoke gave me - he had a coupla finds and forward effort but likely not what he needed to do beat those guys!! Thought my Bugsy dog was looking like he came to play and felt like I had a tiger by the tail for a little while - he had one super nice solid "trained by Dunfur Kennel" find followed by a jump at the bird "trained by Favor Kennel" find!  Oh well, we'll get it right one of these days!! I went mainly to scout for my training buddy and, darn it, his dog just took the day off - bad day to have a bad day. That's the way it goes sometimes.

Took some pics - got a little carried away as usual!:

Know you're gettin' close to the grounds when the grapes give way to chukar country:

They're still goin' at it up there for the next two weeks with the Pacific Coast Field Trial Assoc. Championships this week and the National Chukar Championship Assoc. trials next week. Git on up there and see some good dogs in some big country!! Lots of nice folks that love to talk dogs!

Doug

Thanks for the pictures, you seem to frequent such beautiful country. When you combine the country with dogs, horses, and birds,...what else do you need.

Way cool Doug! Is this a wild bird trial? Looks like y'all had some nice weather too.

Thanks guys! I'm sure they'd love to have you and your dogs up to share it with 'em!

No, not a wild bird trial Casper. There are some native birds on the courses - I saw quail and huns this trip but never saw any dog work on 'em while I was there. My bird work with Smoke was a pair of "chukar" that just flat out ran me and never flushed so I gave up, blanked and moved on, then he had a "chukar" that walked right past him to his flank then flushed right up over his back (he rocked back watchin' that bird over his head and dang near ended up on the ground - I was gonna pick up but Rich said the dog was fine, that I was just a horrible flusher and to go on!). Bugsy had a find on a chukar that may have been native - it rocketed out of there just as I walked up like birds should, then he had a find on a chukar that he stood and stood until he couldn't take it and chased it around a sagebush a couple times before it flew! Dang it!! I hate those stupid birds - just raven bait and there were tons of dead carcasses on course - one dog pointed 5 piles of feathers. Ridiculous but that's the game I guess.

Regardless they are still dogs. As long as they are still finding birds thats all that matters I suppose.

Hope to see the two of you in Reno in a few weeks.

Party on

Thanks Gar-dog! I'm sure there'd be some friendly folks there to show ya' some hospitality! Personally I prefer a couple other venues out this way over these for scenery but it is beaufiful for sure!

BTW -
Champion - Riverton's Blackeyed Pea, owned/handled by Matt Coverdale (Matt lives just up the road from me here in ID and his dog is trained by Richie Robertson, glad for those guys! Thats her 3rd or 4th CH I think)

RUCh - "Tilley" (dang it, can't remember her registered name) owned/handled by Todd Schaaf. Way glad for him too - all his buddies, ailing from the previous nights celebrations, bailed on him for scouting so he had to scrounge me out to do it for him - luckily it didn't cost him the placement!! Fun to be part of it - 'ol Dark the scout horse scores another!

"bleep" - Now I am just homesick

Post by Wa Chukar Hunter » Thu Mar 20, 2008 3:44 am

I sure miss home. I grew up 15 miles south of Anderson Ranch on the other side of Sunnyside - I miss home something fierce now.

Should have never left.

Up there you might have some cold temps and wind. But, generally no snow or rain.
