good books on training

Post by CMJ76 » Sat Dec 29, 2007 6:07 pm

Hello, I just recently got a 6 month old GSP and want to train her for hunting but can not afford to have her trained by a profesional trainer. I was wondering if there is any good books or videos that I could use to train her myself. She is a really smart dog. Thank You

I really like Dave Walker's book The Bird Dog Training Manual. You can find it here: http://www.davewalkerdogs.com/the-bird- ... manual.htm I would also get his pinch collar and a good checkcord.

I highly recommend "The Perfect Start" and "The Perfect Finish" videos. They can be ordered from Perfection Gun Dog Kennels. Jon Hann makes it so easy to understand.

A couple of our sponsors sell them. Would be nice to support our fellow members.

For nice starter book I like Training Pointing Dogs by Paul Long. It's a simple no nonsense approach to training and easy to follow.

I read up on these and always go back to Delmar. Look at all you can and try to find a method that seems natural to you. Gentel training wit htreats and repitition is how I get it done. Same thing same order every night.

I would recomend Dave Walker's book and a dvd called the Perfect Start by Jon and Cindy Hahn. I have them in stock if you need them. Good luck
