Dummy Training

Post by markm » Mon Jan 10, 2005 2:45 pm

I've got a 7 month old Vizsla who lives indoors. Is it a bad idea to play fetch with a training dummy inside the house? I've heard that you should clearly separate inside "play" and outside "training". Obviously I wouldn't leave the dummy for the pup to chew on like a bone, but could it lead to her believing that when the dummy comes out it is play time. I thought it would be benefitial because she could be working on her retrieval skills when she would be otherwise playing or chewing a bone. Any thoughts??

I leave the training dummy for outside use, and use any toy or tennis ball for inside play retrieving. With the limited space and the want to play, Justus comes right back to me more often when playing indoors than retrieving outdoors.

Basically, just to be safe, if you can use something other than the dummy I'd do it. V's aren't picky about what they play with... sometimes a sock with a knot tied in it will do just fine.
