Post by WiskeyJaR » Sat Sep 15, 2007 8:56 pm

looking for a good beginners video on field training dogs. Something that maybe teaches the hunter as well as the dog? After all...would really hate to be in a field with a dog thats smarter then I am. har har

What type dog do you have, pointing or retrieving? That would rule out some tapes.

Maybe. You could use retrieving and flushing. The videos are usually type restricted. Probably all will go into retrieving but if you get a retriever, a retriever video is what you want. If you end up with a pointer, then a pointing dog video is what you want. Retrieving is simply a function that can be trained to any breed. But generally speaking, no breeds do it so well as the retrievers.

You might also concider a spaniel, springer or boykin. Springer's would be lots easier to find. I don't know of a video dealing with them but am sure there muct be some.

For now, I'd recommend "The Monks of New Skete". it's a great insight into training dogs in general. They deal with German Shepards.

what he means by a pointer or a retriever is like a lab is a retriever it retrieves game and flushes game. A german wirehaired pointer is a pointer and points and retrieves downed game so if you get a retriever dvd it will only talk about retreiving stuff where as a pointer dvd will talk about pointing and just a tiny but of retrieving. If you want it all there is a couple of things you can do. You could geta pointing lab http://www.pointinglabtx.com/ and it will point and retrieve but will be better at retrieving or you could get a GWP www.devatakennels.org that would mainly point but also is a good retriever.

If you are getting a Retriever I suggest you get the book 10 Minute Retriever by John and Amy Dahl and a dvd called fowl Dawgs 1.

If you are getting a Pointing breed I would get the dvd called The Perfect Start by Jon and Cindy Hann. You can see all of them at www.coonriverkennels.com Good luck

A good set of videos that covers basic training on both pointing and flushing dogs and/or retrievers are the videos put out by Rick and Ronnie Smith. Puppy Development 1 and 2 and Silent command system are good simple videos to help you get started.
