Using pigeons is an inexpensive way to stay on top of things. You don't need to put a dozed down daily. I generally put out 3-4 once, maybe twice a week for the seasoned hunters. Once they know their job, they just need occassional brushing up on it. I always use whoa whenever I can, however.

Up here in Vermont when its off season it usually means 3 Ft. of snow and -20 so I am pretty limited . I did build a small whoa table and worked on fetching and holding dummies , whoa. I got him holding the dummie for about 10 min. with me in another room any longer he jumps off the table and comes looking for me BUT he dose not drop his dummie, so some good came of it

Gunner I use a combination of roading and field work to keep the dogs sharp year round. Roading for conditioning and keeping those pads pliable and the field work on Johnny house or free flighted quail keeps the manners intact and lets me see any weaknesses if they develop.
