different levels on e collar

Post by jbr03 » Mon Feb 26, 2007 2:24 pm

hey everybody,
my 4 1/2 month old english pointer is coming along quite well. i would like to go ahead and buy an e collar for her to let her get used to the feel of the trasmitter around her neck and then in around 1-2 months (depending how far along i thnk she is with the checkcord) i would like to turn it on and start e collar use. from what ive been reading these past few months ive decided to go with a tri tronics collar. i like the new G3 model for the fact that its small and relatively inexpensive. my question is this. they have just come out with a new G3 model, the G3 sport combo, that offers double the stimulation levels than the G3 basic. is this a big advantage? this is my first bird dog and i ultimately only plan on using the collar when out in the field and she wont come when i call her. i may find other uses for it but im no field trialer or anything and just want to go and have fun with my dog and let her do what she was born to do. is the G3 sport basic with the 10 stim. levels going to to the job just fine, or is the G3 combo a better idea?

The G3 is a decent little collar

It doesn't have the longest of ranges but for most average hunters it will service well

also training prior to the collar is Key...and being able to use the lowest levels a dog will respond to when a Needed correction is alos good..
most situations the collar will be set on one level...only requiring higher when something is raisig the level of endorphines for the dog like a chase on unwanted quarry or even a bird if you have one that is willing to go pass a reminder...

the basic will handle just about everything if you want to run with a beeper for thicker cover the upland will be good

other nice thing Tri tronics has a 30 day money back gaurantee so if it isn't what you wanted you can upgrade to one that will be better suited for what you want

It really matters on your dog if the extra levels of stimulation are important. If your dog is on the softer side I like the extra levels because a softer dog needs the extra progression steps from low to high to get them through collar conditioning. If its a real hard charging dog you can get by with the other collar. I offer a Gun Dog member discount on Tri-tronics e-collars. If you need the discounted price e-mail me at mark@coonriverkennels.com Good luck

also, where can i get material such as videos where it discusses proper collar use. does the collar itself come with a book other than ''this button does this and that button does that"

tri tronics has a DVD that comes with the collar...the trainer talks alot ..but it gives a pretty good concept of how to use it

Also if there is a training group near you ...watch them and they can help you intro

Rick smith has an awesome seminar which takes you through some foundation training that is great if you can do that..best money a person can spend on learning a foundation method for bird dogs

Dobbs Training Center. It's about the best out there if you want an electrically trained dog.
LIFE WITHOUT BIRD DOGS AND FLY RODS REALLY ISN'T LIFE AT ALL.
