Blanks for Training

Post by Hotpepper » Wed Feb 21, 2007 10:38 am

What kind of blanks do you fella use.

Posted this on another spot.

If you guys have not been to Lowe's or Home Depot and bought the 22 cal blank nail drivers, that is the way to go. The greed ones are real lound (not too loud) and the quality control is real nice. I think I have 3 boxes in my blank gon box.

Give em a try.

I found a .22 blank pistol in the top of my grandfather's coat closet. When my wife got her first teaching job she found two boxes of blanks in the drawer of her desk (used to belong to a coach or athletic director), one was a small plastic container of acorn crimps and the other was a small box of winchester black powder blanks.

That's all I've used, other than my training partner's NEF .22 with the nail gun blanks (yellow, I think).

I have always reloaded primers into empty hulls and carried an old shotgun (or had a partner help). My thinking is that the dog gets to associate training with the gun as well as hunting with the gun. I had also read somewhere that using a full size gun helps to condition the dog to look where the gun is being pointed to see birds fall. 209 primers are cheap and the task is easy (if you already have a reloader). The sound is loud enough to get the point across, but soft enough for use with younger dogs.

I sure wish my state would allow the use of a shotgun with blank ammo for training :( You are correct that using a long gun will teach the dog to follow the gun and will improve marking

I have found that the .22 cal blanks that you buy at Lowes and Home Depot do not work well in my blank pistol. I bought the Champion pistol from Lion Country Supply and the blanks fit too tight and will not come out easily after firing the round. They work, but I am scared the cartriage will not come out, so I have stuck with the Winchester or other starter pistol brands. They seem to do well for me.

Emptypair,

I was looking back and found this thred. I agree with you about the shotgun with primer's. What I do is to take a 1/4" drill bit and drill out the primer pocket's of bad shell's. Then after you fire the shell, just knock out the primer by tapping the shell rim on your reciever and push in a new one with your finger's. I also have a blank gun.

Yup, the hilti loads the home centers sell. I shoot mine out of a 22 pistol so I don't have to own a blank also. That way I have a ratshot pistol for varmints and a blank for the dogs.

I use a blank gun that holds 209 Primer Caps. Seems to work fine, and the 209's are cheap.
