How do you train steady to wing and shot

Post by mm » Wed Aug 27, 2025 6:26 am

I am working with a young dog now and I am wondering what are your steps to get a dog steady to wing and shot?

What problems have you had and how did you overcome them if you did?

What age was the dog when started and when Finished?

Anything else you might want to add. I am no expert and would like to learn more. I have found most books lacking in detail and they seem to gloss over steps.

I would imagine that you have instilled a solid whoa into your basic obedience commands - that is the first place to start.

I'm no expert , but I'm sure some of the experts will respond and help.

"Wing and shot" are two separate skills taught separately with months between imo.
I never started until the dog was at least 8 months old.
Then I planted pigeons( got them at small animal auctions.) had the dog on the leash and taught, :We don't chase".
When starting "the shot" I made sure sure the dog was far off and very gradually moved the shot closer to the dog.

(Sorry for the 3 pics. Couldn't delete them.) :)

I like carded pigeons and later a helper. I teach steady to wing first. I don't take any outside dogs in anymore. I do help a friend or old customer on occasion.
