Bird introduced to puppy

Post by rcrobert75 » Fri Mar 26, 2021 6:39 pm

Need guidance on keeping my pup from eating birds.
So I tossed him a couple retrieves with frozen bird.
And he just stops and wants to eat and thrash it around.
How do you curb that behavior without sounding like you are reprimanding him from going to the bird?

Work on your recall - get the recall very solid. Then throw him a fresh bird and call him in - keep him moving in so he doesn't have time to think about stopping to mouth/chew/toss etc,.

How old of a pup is this?
Does the pup retrieve dummies already?
Anything with a bird needs to be in a very controlled setting....on a bench or short hallway, etc., wearing a lead so you can pull dog to you before he eats bird. Dogs are alittle confused with the feathers the 1st time. Put wings on a dummy 1st before using a frobird.
You might watch Dr. Dale Hubbard youtube videos on fetching. Start with 'place'.

Do it with a check cord. Keep the dog moving once it gets the bird. They won't chew it while their feet are moving. As soon as they pick it up call them and keep the feet moving until you can get the bird.
