Wild and Crazy Puppy

Post by reba » Sat Jan 09, 2021 2:51 pm

There have been several questions about training young dogs.

So I thought I would offer my recent experience.

I had not had a puppy for more than 7 years.

I got my female GSP, Gypsy, when she was 9 weeks old.

She was born December 1, 2019.

I took her to obedience classes. At 9 months she spend 5 weeks at professional puppy gundog school.

She hunted wild birds almost 100 days and did have a few hard points and good honor backs. (sage grouse, ruffed grouse, quail, pheasant, chukar, sharptail)

We finished off the wild bird hunting just before Christmas.

From the very first day I got her home she was a WILD CHILD. Unbelieable energy and the most athletic dog I have ever owned , etc.!!!! Almost demonic!

I have continued to run and train her daily. Just a few days ago something happened. She began retrieving to hand and not playing keep away. When she comes in the house she doesn't jump around like a wild women. She can sit and lay down beside me and go to sleep. If my other GSP is in the spot she wants she finds another. Counter surfing is to a minimum. Oh! No! she just walked in with one of my socks, but she delivered to hand:-)

So what I wanted everyone to know is don't expect to much to soon. Don't be to hard on your pup, because your pup is training you to be patient. So once your pup teaches you to accept or tolerate delays, problems, or suffering without becoming annoyed or anxious, puppy will get it.

Thanks for that! My 14wk old pup was a demon all day today. I keep reminding myself to play the long game.
