Frozen game birds are NOT where you start in the process if ever at all! Installing the trained retrieved is about a process, not about birds.
There are many threads on this forum covering the subject,in fact to many to count!

He's already quite the retriever I'm just wanting him to get used to carrying birds in his mouth.

I have never seen a pup that needed to get used to it. They may need remedial work later but That is a wait and see thing in my mind. And if you think about it why would they need to get use to carrying a frozen bird? I would wait till you can practice with a real freshly killed bird and see if there is anything that needs working on. And even then the decision would not be made quickly since I find most things improve with a little guidance and a lot of practice.

It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!

Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

Sounds good! I have heard of people using frozen birds for retrieving practice and getting used to the bird but it seems like I am just overthinking it. Thanks for all of the help!

Go find a game farm and buy a bird or contact a nstra or navhda group and go to a training day or go shoot a pigeon and use it. Some dogs don't like a mouth full of feathers vs finding the next bird. You might use a sock over the middle part as a transition. I use frozen birds to work through hard mouthed problems.
