Tips on pigeons/ new trainer

Post by okie_birdhunter » Mon Feb 15, 2016 12:50 pm

Hello, I have just recently purchased a small munsterlander for a dual purpose dog (upland/waterfowl).

I built a loft for training pigeons and the birds I've gotten are feral birds from a local arena.

Any tips or FYIs would be appreciated.

I've hunted labs for serval years doing the training myself but I've never had a pointer. I've gotten hixcocks training DVDs but any input would be appreciated.

Do I need to get some quail ?
How long do feral pigeons have to be in coop to come back to the coop ?

Let the ferals go to nest. Fly the young.

You may need quail or some other type of bird down the road but it will depend what is available in the wild where you train. I used pigeons for most training. I would shut your birds in till you have young ones and then you might let them out when they are sitting on or feeding their second batch of young. That way if they don't return you will have young birds that will and if they are on the nest they will have an added reason to return.

+1 Pigeons are a starting point. You will need quail to finish with. Who does your LM go back to! I have worked with some 25 LM's during my training days.
