small pigeon coop

has anyone tryed to make a coop only 2 foot wide say a 6 x 2 x 4 or is 2 foot just too short...

for say 8 or so birds.

Never even heard of one that small. Why are you thinking of it?

I had one that small. I quickly out grew it. I felt bad for the birds. Lion Country supply has plans for a coop like that.

I use a crate that big for my pigeons BUT they must be used up within 2-3 days or they won't fly well or at all. A flight pen is needed to have pigeons that maintain their ability to fly well .... or homers you release to fly regularly.

I should not comment seeing as how my pen is 24'w12'h30'l.
For 8 birds 4'w6'h4'l would seem like the minimum just for getting in and out when catching,feeding,watering birds. But whatever!

2 Sq. ft. of floor space fer bird. Don't want it much over head high if you have a walk-in for ease of catching.

I have a 3ft by 5 ft one now like the LCS plans.

it is a pain to clean... and catching pigeons...

but if it was narrow it would make it a lot easer...

Here is mine. it is a modified version of the LCS plan. I wanted a big door and plenty of ventilation. the LCS plan is smaller door and all plywood. adapt to anything you need. Notice the 1 x 2 mesh in the front. I had to make this much tighter mesh, rats would squeeze through that to get to the pigeion food.

That's a nice looking pen. Never figured out why something larger wouldn't be somewhat better. Must be a pain inside it with the birds flapping around in panic stage! I suppose cleaning isn't to bad. Do you simply run the birds out to clean. I have two loft's, one for ferals and one for homer's. The feral pen is a converted lawn tool shed and has a rather low flat roof. Great for catching birds with a net. The homer loft was made to put chicken's in but I converted it to a pigeon loft. fairly easy to catch birds with a net but, peaked roof is a pain in the butt! Both my loft's will hold 70+ birds at two sq ft per bird. I don't even run low on birds! lol

If just using for shooter birds, get a 6X6X6 chainlink dog kennel and an extra panel to put across the top. Secure the top to the sides with hose clamps. Run a few 2X2X8 boards through the fence fabric and you have perches. You can also go another step and put a tarp across the top for a rain cover.

any body know of a design that makes it easer to catch them...

if you had a small removeable avery and could push them to the avery with some kind of moveing wall .. you could use the avery for your bird box.

We had one up in the top of the barn the pigins used for nesting. Dad would go and get the little ones and he had squab for dinner. He ate stuff I just couldn't, like rocky mountain oysters, the ones from our cows and the ones I brought back from my cousins hog lot after we cut 200 piggies. Cut pull drop in the bucket......

4' x 8' About 8' h in the front. I try to keep about 20 - 25 but that goes up and down as mine seem to breed like crazy. I've given 25 away in the last 5 months.

I built the loft from LC Supply a couple of months ago and I have 6 homers in it:


In the last few weeks I've been letting my birds fly -- they were all young birds that were never flown. If the weather is good, I let them fly every day now and they will come back and trap when they're hungry or to roost at night. The first flight a few spent the night outside somewhere and I was worried but by evening the next day, they were all back inside. Now when they fly, they circle around a lot and then come back soon and hang out on my roof (or the nighbors) or in the yard.

I won't be sticking with this small loft forever -- hoping to upgrade next year when I also hope to have more space. However, it seems to be working fine for me so far.

Don, I flush them into the avery. I have a door into the avery, so I close it when they go in. Then I have a door on the front of the avery and just reach in a grab the pigeions I want to use. the big door makes it easier to clean, feed and water.
