Welcome to the forum. The good thing about being in SD, is you'll get the pup into a lot of wild birds his first year :D

Have you chosen a good breeder? Don't limit your search to local dogs. Seek out a club like NAVHDA for resources and help.

"The Perfect Start" DVD's available at Gun Dog Supply would be my recommendation. The techniques and order in which they are used almost makes training automatic. Not cheap but worth every penny. You can get the Perfect Start double dvd.set and also the Perfect Finish set for around $125. After your dog is trained, I'm sure you would have no trouble selling the set. I'll be getting my Llwellin pup soon and bought the set to review. 6 hours of video. Very impressive.

Stan Hagg in Iowa used to raise shorthairs. Anyone know if he's still around?
I pity the man that has never been loved by a dog!

anything that has small parts (buttons, real small balls, etc) that they can tear off and swallow causing an obstruction. :(

I was told not to get anything that squeaks and not to ever play tug-o-war with the pup. I think I did both but in moderation
