Labrador steady problems
Labrador steady problems
Hey i was just wondering my lab is 10 months now and is very obident with all the commands and is decently steady i go out to the farm and lean up agianst a round bail shoot blow the duck call throw bumpers and birds and he stays steady for me with out whining. This morning we hunted a creek edge and we were just laying on the bank and we had a couple good groups working he was staying decently steady but he was whining cause he was so excited watching the birds work us we got are limit but his whining i think scared a couple diffrent groups. is there anything i can do to help with this i no it is just his excitement and he is young. but it gets a little frusturating when people invite you to hunt and your dog wines granted they no he is a young and he did his job floulisly and kept us all dry. but the whining has to stop.
Thanks for all your help

Your title says, "steady problems", but your post says it's a whining problem --------- Which one is it.
Steady and whining may or may not be related.
Do you train with a "remote" thrower ? (human or mechanical) Or do you do all of the throws yourself ?

Excellent questions that need to be addressed. The bigger issue would be the age of the pup. At 10 months you may be over whelming him the position that your are putting him in.Del Lolo wrote:Your title says, "steady problems", but your post says it's a whining problem --------- Which one is it.

Re: Labrador steady problems
THE STEADY PROBLEM IS HE GETS SO EXCHITED THAT HE EDGES FORWARD JUST A LITTLE BIT WHICH IS NOT REALLY MY CONCERN CAUSE I NO HOW TO CORRECT HIM FROM THERE. BUT THE WHINING PART IS THE MAIN ISSUE SO I GUESS IT IS A WHINING PROBLEM MORE THEN ANYTHING. I DO ALL MY THROWS MYSELF. I WAS THINKING ABOUT TAKING HIM OUT BUY THE BARN WHERE ALL THE SPARROWS KEEP GOING IN AND OUT OF THE BARN KINDA BE LIKE A REAL SITUATION JUST SMALLER BIRDS. BUT THE MAIN PROBLEM IS I DONT NO HOW TO TEACH HIM NOT TO WHINE SO THAT WOULD BE USELESS UNLESS I NO HOW TO CORRECT HIS WHINING.

Re: Labrador steady problems
For both creeping and whining, try a "contradictory" command.
Even if the dog is sitting, command "SIT" or "HEEL - SIT".
Are you following a proven - modern - sequential training program ?
To me it sounds like you are just "winging it".

+1 on Del Lolo. Don't disregard the creep. A creep is an inch away from a break.
For the whine, command No Noise, and pinch his muzzle HARD. Don't let him have the bird id he creeps or whines.
Easier to stop it at ten months than ten years.

LIFE WITHOUT BIRD DOGS AND FLY RODS REALLY ISN'T LIFE AT ALL.
Re: Labrador steady problems
yes i have a program but it does not have any corrections for whining it does for the inching forward which i correct him for any time he does it which is not often luckily

Let me hear from you. The noise, the creeping - both are elements of the steadiness standard. A non slip retriever should sit quietly on line until sent. My email is rushcreekpress@aol.comzink2013 wrote:tom dokkens and smart works FF
