Many times like age, it develops. You can help,it along by salting a field with birds and having them in the same spots each time, each spot about 200 yards from the other.
LIFE WITHOUT BIRD DOGS AND FLY RODS REALLY ISN'T LIFE AT ALL.

I notice my dog opens up more when another dog is in the field. Competitiveness seems to give a little more confidence.

TRue for some dogs but some dogs will hang back when worked with another dog.
tip: Say as little as possible when the dog is working the field ; it will help in increasing his independence from you.

Start training sessions with a single planted bird -- always at the far, opposite end of the field.
Re: Increasing Range?
Start sessions with the bird at the end of the field. Walk the dog to the bird. Repeat the session the next day. And the next day. And the next day. One day the dog will head to the end of the field when you let him go.

Re: Increasing Range?
You may be able to do a few things to help build a dogs confidence but they are only going to range out to a distance they are comfortable with. It is much easier to take it out of them than put it in. How far is your dog ranging now?

He is 9 months old now, he will range about 40-50 yards on average. Sometimes more, sometimes less.Georgia Boy wrote:You may be able to do a few things to help build a dogs confidence but they are only going to range out to a distance they are comfortable with. Re: Increasing Range?
At 9mo I wouldn't be to worried. your dog will start to stretch with confidence and experience. Put your dog on the ground and walk. Don't say anything.

A limit on the strap is nice, but the kill has nothing to do with tradition.
Re: Increasing Range?
Pheasant season opened last week and I've gotten him out a few more times to run the fields and use his nose. His range opened up once I got him into lighter and more open cover, he was easily ranging out to 150 yards or so at times.
Thanks for the advice.
