What commands do you link to your whistle, and how many toots?

So far I have my 15 month old coming, "here", on two toots of a whistle.

Two toots for release
Long Trill to send them out.
Medium long trills to let them know where I am.

When I trained my retriever, I used one long for halt, two blasts to turn, 4 to recall.

My pointer was trained to go on 4 quick blasts, turn in on 2 blasts.

whistles bother the heck out of me... don't use them I do use the tone botton on his collar

I am not big on a whistle either,but it carries much better than a voice in windy conditions or in wooded areas. Two sort blasts = come here now.

I prefer to use the collar tone to turn or recall my pointer. But in certain situations, I use a combination of whistle and tone. If the dog may not know exactly where I am in broken and heavy cover, I use both.

With flushers one tweet is hup, two go. A long blast means look st me for direction.

As they mature and learn I use the whistle less and less.

I don't like when others use a whistle excessively, but hypocrisy being what it is, I continue to use mine.

Not to start an argument, but why should all pointing dogs be trained like a trial dog? When not all are or willing...

To the op question, it's good to mix it up, but to many commands with a whistle can get confusing, even for the handler. Pick 3 commands that you will mostly use. The rest can be hand signals or voice.

i had a guy hunting a field along side the field me and my dogs were in and he was so hard on the whistle my one dog said if he blows that thing one more time i'm gonna shove it...welp! I just got my dogs out of there

On the flip side of that someone using the whistle too much is also pretty frustrating when you have to listen to someone yelling at their dogs all the time. I am just getting started with my own pointing dog and I only hope I am not that guy either way.

I just use one toot to sit, and 3 for here.

On the pea less side of the whistle

Two short for here, which means come and sit in front of me.
One short for turn, change direction.
One long is usually used when they are out of sight, it means come back around for a visual so I can cast in preferred direction or at least know I am going the right way.

On the pea roller side of the whistle

Only used of one thing

One long means come to a complete stop (Halt), I have my dogs lie down. Used if they may be in danger or possibly chasing a deer or something.

No argument from me, but all my pointing hunting dogs trial, all trained the same way to the same standard. And I didn't say anything about how others should train, I don't care.

If you get too liberal with voice and whistle commands in a trial, an unscrupulous brace mate may try to handle your dog. The less commands the better with both hunting and trialing.

I use a whistle. Two short to turn and one long for recall, used when I think they are out of voice range. I never saw the need to use it to tell them to go. And for those who think it is annoying, you are correct, it can be. However, if a person nags his/her dog, it is going to be annoying, regardless of the method they use. As AZ pointed out, the less commands used, the better.

I am too old to change, but I think there might be value in other combinations if I were starting a new.

I use 1 to sit, 2 to turn/change direction, and 3-4 short ones together for recall. That's it, no need to over complicate things. To get him to go I just tell him to get on, he should be close enough to hear your voice if you're having to tell him to get moving.

The point I was trying to make was if you use one toot for hup, and two or more for other commands, why does it work? Shouldn't the dog start to sit when he hears the first toot?

The fact we and many others do it succesfully, tells me it is really not a concern. If it works, it works.
