as I am told rule of thumb is once a pointing dog has at least one solid wild bird season under him than FF him, retrievers at about 6 months. Why I still dont know other than assuming the retrievers has to do it as its sole job at is best to get flawlessness early.

This spring I will be doing at least 3 dogs possible 4

I think I have bitten off more than I can chew but its fun chewing

FF has helped me achieve goals with my dogs. Each of our 8 dogs performance on the table has varied under both the Hold & Fetch command. Some dogs finsished table & ground work in 3 months, my last brittany took 5 months. The dogs were started at atleast 18 months or older.

If I only owned one dog, I would seek assistance from a professional.

Two-fold reply to this one: First, not everyone needs to FF a dog to get what they want out of it. Secondly, because of my demand (and hunt test rules) I want an unflawed retrieve to hand every time, so I did FF my own dog.

The right age really depends on the dog. Some can handle it at 8 months I'm sure. Others will need to be over 2 years old to handle the pressure. I personally wouldn't FF a dog under a year old, and would prefer to wait until 14 to 18 months. It just works better the more mature the dog has become.
