Punishment for humping

Post by robert_lh » Thu Apr 11, 2013 10:11 pm

My 9 month old male britt is now becoming a humper. How can I/should I punish him for doing it. He really doesn't try it with me too often but my wife is annoyed and that means I am too. Thanks for the help.

Before anyone starts jumpin on me, it is only a joke but I could not help myself from replying. Tell him to get married and that usually stops it.  On a serious note, I have not had that problem with my dogs. Sorry for both answers.

She needs to push him off her leg and say "No!"

It's a dominance issue --- it's not sexual.
The dog doesn't realize where it is in the 'pack order' (should be the Omega).

Have you heard of the "Alpha Roll" ?

Sure, use the alpha roll and you will get a dog that let humps then falls off and lands on his back, kind of like a rabbit. Get video.

Teach the dog "Leave it." Use a correction (I'd pop him on the backside) if he doesn't knock it off immediately. Crate him when you don't want to deal with the behavior, like during movie night. Reward him for staying in his own spot. It's not dominanace, it's annoying juvenile behavior that is being directed at the closest target.

Or, you could get him a PillowPet and leave the room.

Squirt was like that as a puppy. Now five years later he only does it to pillow's. Sometime's on the couch and sometimes in the bedroom. Oh forgot. Get's my leg when he's in a hurry to go out. Means he wants to go freekin out now!

My brothers neutered beagle humps my dog the min we step in the house and doesn't stop till we leave. I wish my dog would lay into him a little but he just pays no mind and does his thing. :(

I knew this would produce some interesting replies... I appreciate everyones input. I tell him "No" and he knows I mean it, but I think my wife is too nice to him even when she's mad. Sounds like I need to train the wife to train the dog... :?

I had the same problem with my dog, I told him know and gave him a thump on the butt, my wife had a little harder time because she wouldn't discipline him every time. He doesn't do it to us anymore just his stuffed moose and my co workers 5 year old son

Try the bonker! I think you'll be amazed by how simple and efffective this is.

Funny that his name is Squirt as well LOL.

What worked for curing my new pup of humping our 10 year old Female Gordon setter seemed to be her owning his "bleep" and making him cry like a school girl.

Say " no".

I will never understand these problems with a basic obedience. No means no. It really is that simple.

If you can't train that you have more problems.

I agree. As long as the notifier, in this case the cue "no" is backed up with a correction every time. It does no good otherwise, just like crying "wolf".

This is why I recommend the bonker for these situations. The dog quickly identifies the notifier with a correction soon to follow, and this ends the behavior.

This has always worked for me except I use the dog's name, in a stern voice, and a no. As stated, it is basic obedience, but if I should need to reinforce, a little electricity works every time.

I've had great success stopping my pointer from sneaking into our bedroom and getting on our bed when we were in another room in the evening. One good bonk and it was a done deal.

When the original post on this appeared, I wondered if an e-collar around the dog's waist, underneath would be effective with a very low level stimulation of a couple volts. Anyone ever try this? I have two bitches, so I've never had to deal with this problem, but I've seen it around the local park.

My male won't jump anyone. Now my female humps every single girl I bring over..... Guess she is making sure they know the pecking order.

He has stopped humping the people that he sees on a regular basis, but when a guest enters the house and they pet him it's on... So I have been using the crap out of the e-collar and it seems to be working effectively. A bump and leave it and he's done with it. I see it all ending soon. Thanks for your help everyone.

I've always had decent luck cracking his testicles with my boot real swiftly. That generally teaches his quick that that isn't a place for a boot.

Kicking a dog will usually lead to one of 2 things; apprehension or aggression. Neither are desirable traits.
