Roading..

Post by ACooper » Sun Feb 24, 2013 6:04 pm

Talk about a train wreck waiting to happen, but so far so good. Dez loves it and really pulls. We average 9.5 mph and I attempt to road him 3-4 days a week. As hard as he works I am not getting near as much exercise as I thought I would. :D

Probly one of the funniest thing I've ever seen was my wife trying to road my Rooster dog off her bike. Worked out real well for about 2 blocks......... not so much after that. Good luck Coop.

A limit on the strap is nice, but the kill has nothing to do with tradition.

Heck we've been going 3-4 days a week for the last month or so. We do several miles at a time. The good thing about where I live is I can the leave the house and head west and usually not even have a car pass, we go straight out several miles then turn around and come straight back, I am not sure how we would handle lots of turns or curves.

Those labs are known for their pulling power, you may gain weight from the lack of exercise . Dez is looking good

I road two at a time on my bike, and my heeler follows along free running. Bike seem to be burning through the brakes pretty quick!

I have seen a spring loaded "hitch" for bicycles that attach to the bolts on the rear wheel. It came up to just behind the seat and a short leash was attached. Looks alot safer to me. If the dog started to pull the spring would take some of the force out and since it is on the back wheel it would not turn you so badly.

Go online and lookup walkydog.com. which attaches to your bike. I use it with my dogs and it works great, and the dogs love it, alot safer than roading on bike with a leash. Had deer, squirrels, rabbits jump in front of us while roading and no problems.

I don't attach the dog to the bike, but rather hold the leash while holding the bars. If he makes a sudden turn or stop I just let go.

I have an idea in my head that I am going to try to fab up. It will be a roading system that attaches to bike, but way different than the Springer.

Same issue running 2 dogs at a time. I actually have been "footing the tire" like I did when I was nine. No beads or cards in the spokes this time though.

I guess you forgot how tough and agile I am!

Are you going to come up to the trial? Hope you are feeling up to it.

".....tough and agile I am!" or young and dumb.... I'm just tryn' to get you through the trail season. If I can find a chauffeur I might, driving is still a little rugged....

Agreed that will be the plan down the road. As long as you have something that will take care of me.

I use the Springer with my Brit when she's home. I get her home every year after Nationals at the beginning of Dec, and drop her off at the first Championship trial near me at the end of January. I have to keep her in shape since she gets no time with the trainer to prep for her return to trials. Along with hunting 7-10 times at 3-4 hours a hunt while she's home, we also road in my housing development 2-3x's a week at an average of 12 MPH for 7 miles a time. The Springer works great and we road on some fairly busy streets at times.

Since I'll be living on a lake this summer I'm gonna hook mine up to my kayak. I bet that won't take long to wear them out.

I've been doing the bike for 6 years with pairs of dogs, and knock on wood, we've managed to stay upright.
