Doves in a Bird Launcher

Would it be a good idea to use doves in a bird launcher for training my GSP?

Morning doves? If so they are Federally protected migratory birds.

You would need to check on the legalities of having doves in the first place.
Personally after I do all the regular training when I feel my dogs are ready to dove hunt I just take them with me and find they learn pretty quick the new game about watching for the flying birds versus running and hunting for upland birds

ring neck doves (eurasian-collard doves) are not protected and may be killed any time with no limits.

Doves..pigeons...what's the difference?

Oh yeah one is illegal to use.

A lot of people refer to "Whites" racing pigeons as doves. Most of the ceremonial release companies use white homing pigeons. If this is what you mean then you should have no problems.

The collard dove', ring neck dove is not protected. What I don't understand is why? I don't know that even if you did catch them they'd be more than a one time use bird. Pigeon's take a licking, come home and are ready to do it over the next day. But I'm certain dove's in a trap would work. When the dove's come back here, they will once again land on the ground here in some type cover and the dog's will point them. They don't cut a dog any slack though. Squirt and Bodies first point's were doves. By the way, they really like wild sun flower's and the dog's can find them on the ground for you if they'll hold.

Say someone has easier access to doves that aren't protected than they do pigeons. Would be it be ok then?

Sure! Use them like a pigeon just don't know if they will home for you.

I would too. They taste great too. Cut out the breast and tenderize and flatten with the meat mallet. Dip them in milk then roll in flour and fry like a chicken fried steak.

Ring Neck Doves may be Illegal to transport live and release in the wild. You would be advised to check with your local F&W agent........I know in some places they are considered an invasive species. Don

I'm fortunate that I've been able to use the birds from my fathers loft. These birds are his babies and I'm thinking one day he might change his mind about letting me use them. There are a lot of spotted doves that hang around his loft, and if I could alternate between the pigeons and doves it would probably make both us feel better. Any and all advice is much appreciated. Thank you.

I can buy ring necked doves at my local feed store for half the price of a pigeon so its what use.

One concern I have about using doves is the dog starting to track doves while hunting. Have you had any issues?
