How long does it usually take for a 2 year old dog to fully adjust to a new trainers facility (home)?
The reason I ask is I have taken on a 2 year old GSP rescue and the first week he seemed very skittish. Now after 2 more weeks he is bolder but still a bit on edge to loud unexpected sounds. The way he retrieves a feathered dummy to hand makes me think he has had some training. I have used a kids cap gun at about 75 yards sometimes he just ignores it other times he comes back to check in.
Should I wait a few more weeks before I work him with a blank pistol and live birds or should I just work him without any gun for a month or two?
Thanks
Grant
Adjustment time
Re: Adjustment time
If it were me, I would hold off for 4-6 more weeks, except for hard exercise..

Great idea. A tired dog is a relaxed dog. And a GSP will appreciate the exercise and love you for it.Sharon wrote:If it were me, I would hold off for 4-6 more weeks, except for hard exercise..

Will do
He checks in often but like all 2 year old dogs he tends do get distracted easily.
He has the love part down pat, I have not had to wash my face for the last 2 weeks

Good responses from the others.
To your question, each dog is different. I've had dogs I could start training day 1 and others that took several weeks before I even let them out of the kennel on a lead. The most important thing, and it sounds like you already understand this, is to read the dog and not try to do anything it is not ready for.
