It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!

Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

You really don't need plans for a pigeon loft. Simple way would be to set up a refrigerator box out of the rain. Of course i would not do that but I'm sure it would work. Decide how many pigeons you might want. Figure two sq ft per bird. Now build a box that size and put a roof on it. One if my pigeon lofts is an old lawn tool shed that was here when I bought the place. The outer is a chicken coop I built just to hold rooster's in.

I strongly suggest you make it so you can walk in. So it needs an entry door, a trap door for the birds. ventilation at the top, and a predator door over the re-entry door for the birds. Bob's, I have discovered after many years of keeping them, are not necessary unless you race and then you need a trap. Use the predator door on the re-entry to lock them in and the rest of the time let them fly free.

Because my last one in a converted chicken coop, it has a 16x20 enclosed flight pen out the back of the loft. The longer I have it, the more I like it. Even when hawks are all over the place, my birds can go out with no fear of the hawks.

There's a pigeon site called, Pigeon Talk. They have a section showing loft's. Don't mention bird dog's, you just like pigeons!

I may hit you upon that Ezzy. I was able to get a coop. I think it only holds 15 birds, but I bet I can get more in there is I want to.

I tried to find a picture of the one I have, but it is a walk in with a slanted roof. It needs some fixing up. But I have 11 barn pigeons in it right now.

Ezzy, can you tell the difference in males and females just by looking at them? I know some people can and I have looked at them for hours and don't see a difference.

As they mature I have a pretty good idea but that comes as much from their behavior as their looks. No one can tell the difference reliably, just doesn't work that way. Don't know if you have read that Cher Ami, the World War Cock that saved a lot of lives by coming home with a severed leg and badly injured breast was found to be a hen when they mounted it for the Museum in Washington DC. She was 12 years old I think at the time.

I haven't read about that. What I understand is pigeons do live a long time, up to 20 yrs and the oldest known 30 yrs. Don't know that to be true though.

Behavior is the only way I know to tell.
