Update on my Britt Pup

Post by John S » Sat Nov 10, 2012 5:11 pm

A couple of months ago I posted because I was in a dilemma on whether to continue my pups training with a trainer or hold off because he was not pointing birds at all.
Well since then I've recovered from my Heart surgery, lost 68#'s and have been feeling well enough to go out with Scout and hunt birds on the club preserve the last 4 weekends.
I am extremely pleased to report that at this time I could not be happier with Scout. Every time I take him out he seems to be more focused and performs better. He still needs some work since most times if he sees a bird before scenting it he has a tendency to chase it. But today he he locked onto 4 separate birds, 2 Chukars, a cock and a hen pheasant. Good solid points and stayed staunch until the birds took to wing. He retrieved the cock and chukar, but I know that I need to work on getting him to hold till released to fetch.
Here are a few pictures taken today;

That is great.
Amazing how patience and birds make the begining of a bird dog.
Enjoy the ride.

Nicely done, that britt is a cutie. Glad to hear that things are coming together. Both for you with your health and your pup....

I'd like to add one other thing I noticed while we were out this past weekend. I normally use freeze dried liver as reward treats when working with Scout and there is almost nothing he wont do to get a reward.
I tried rewarding him after a good point or retrieve this weekend and he would have nothing to do with the treats. If I called him to me and offered the treat he all but ignored it and brushed past me to go looking for more birds. I could be wrong but I interpret this as him having a really strong hunt drive and when he is in hunt mode that is all that matters to him. BTW, Scout is now 11 months old. :D

Congrats not only on Scout, but on your weight loss as well. That is a real accomplishment! Sounds like Scout is going to be a great birddog for you. Good luck.
