Yes, he is, or at least for several years was, located in ND. He was a pro trainer who ran a great setter that was a multiple cover dog champion back in the early 80's, named Jet Train. I saw Jet Train run a few times. He was an extremely stylish dog on point, probably one of the most if not the most sytlish dog I have ever seen, and I have seen one or two. He was always very high at both ends and looked like he was ready to explode, even tho he was stock still.
Don't know anything about Marti's "method" though. As I recall, Jet Train was a dog he acquired when it was finished, and then ran successfully as an adult dog.
Subsequently, he stopped running cover dog trials and I heard that he was running prairie trials with his setters.

that is how i start dogs we breed. i will play with them with a wing on a string between 5 and 8 weeks, and then start them on pen raised quail. they will generally be pointing by the time they are 10 weeks, and sometimes they are out in the rough kind of tottering around, barely able to walk, but loving every moment of it. i start with quail because they are not so big they can hurt or frighten a dog of that age.
a fella like Marti, who has ready access to the prairies and wild birds to train on, will probably do this with pups out of a spring litter, and then have them running on wild young sharptail by the time they are 4-6 months old. you have a guaranteed bird dog with that kind of a start. getting a handle and some control over the pup might be a challenge later, cause they learn to love to hunt and go. but they will be so buzzed up about birds that any mistakes you make in training will rarely show in diminished style or desire.
30 years would be about right. he was only into it three or four years when I saw him run Jet Train, and that would have been 81, 82 somewhere in there.
