Where to get birds for training

Post by matt poker » Sun May 21, 2006 4:48 pm

I just adopted a 6 month old black lab from the humane society a few days ago. I'd like to train her to hunt pheasants. Is there anywhere I can buy adult pheasants in WI, or anywhere that would ship them? Here's a few pics of her:
She found this antler yesterday while I was letting her run in a field.

And here she is sleeping after running around all day.

First thing you should do is make sure the dog is not gun shy.

I am not sure I agree with the first thing to check is gun shy. Good way to make them gun shy. The first thing I would do is get her bird crazy. Find a source for gettin some quail or pigeons and get her out for walks in the fields where she can find and chase a few. After she is bird crazy then introduce a blank at a distance while she is in pursuit. Pay close attn to her reaction.

She doesnt mind gunfire. I threw her dummy alot and after a while I started shooting a cap gun when I threw it. Then I used a dummy launcher with .22 blanks, and she didnt mind the noise, but couldnt figure out where the dummy went because it went so fast. I need to get some lighter loads and try that. She already tries to get just about every bird she see's, but I'll try to get some pigeons or something for her.
