Uh oh... he caught a Dove!

Post by Jon E » Sat May 13, 2006 9:18 pm

its true, we were out on one of our lengthy evening walks tonight, and all of a sudden Duke (7 month old GSP) locked on point, I look ahead and see 4 geese standing in the field infront of us. so he is holding his point quite nicely, I tell him good boy and start walking, the geese fly, he stands still for a moment, (read; few seconds) then takes off to where the geese were. seconds later I see him lunging at a dove that is desperately trying to get away and then he catches it! runs around for a couple seconds and then comes back to me with a mouth full of feathers. after that, we continued walking along, and he pointed at a couple ducks in the field and then chased them as they flew away. should I be walking him on a check cord to prevent this from happening in the futrure until he is properly "whoa" broke? or is this an acceptable bit of puppy luck? please advise, I am racking my brain over this.

I'd agree with Brenda. Puppy luck. Just laugh and shake your head.

It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!

Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

Sounds like your dog is having loads of fun.

Not sure what Rosie would do if she caught a bird,

Jon,

The first time my pup saw a bird, he sat there and pointed it, but when it flew up, he grabbed the bird mid air! I was amazed he could catch him! Very fast reflexes!

But this could end up being a problem since I want him to point AS SOON AS he picks up the scent. That will require some training.
